NAME-CHANGE AMNESTY: Change your username without penalty until Nov. 22

There are many DU members whose usernames became obsolete on election day. For example, if their usernames referred to John Kerry or any other Democratic candidate. If you have an obsolete username, you have the opportunity to change your username without penalty between now and Monday, November 22.

Members who change their usernames will not lose their post counts or donor stars. If you change your name, you will be automatically assigned a special red signature line which includes your former username.

You will have only one opportunity to change your name. Please don't screw it up, or else you're stuck with it.

We hope that most members will keep their current names, because too many new names will cause mass confusion. If you do not have an obsolete username then we hope you will choose not to change your name, but we are not going to stop you if you do.

Back when I signed up, the very thought that there would be a time that I was not in college (or indeed that I would still be on the DU forums at that time) was rather foreign to me, since that was over three years ago now, heh.

Anyway, soon this name will be obsolete, though obviously not because of the election that has passed. I've thought for a little while that it might be a good idea to change it, because soon "college" will no longer be a defining thing about me. But I didn't want to give up my post count/star/registration date (although the latter is screwed up right now anyway.) Am I still eligible to change my name here? I don't want to abuse the intent of this.

Maybe somewhere on a person's profile page you could keep the "formerly known as 'old name'" for a period of longer than 30 days, or permanently possibly. I havn't been posting as much lately as I once did so my new name may not get around much.
