Should One Expect To Have A Penny Returned To Them As Change?
Edited on Sun Nov-07-04 12:38 PM by Magic Rat
I just got back from 7-11 where I bought a cherry slurpee. It cost $1.29 and I gave the cashier a dollar, a quarter and a nickel - $1.30.

I stood there and the cashier said 'Thank You.' and walked away.

I didn't know what to do exactly. I'm not going to haggle over a penny, but I think I should have gotten it back since, technically, it was MY penny.

What do you think, haggle over the penny or just let it go? Stand on principle, or just forget about it?

3. It's still YOUR money...I expect everything I'm owed to be given back,
then I'LL decide if I want to throw it away or not.

4. I've had this happen, but always in my favor
For instance, I'm supposed to get 29 cents change and they give me 30. Since they are the ones giving out the change, it is up to them if they want to give you a few pennies extra to make changing easier. They shouldn't shortchange you though, even for a penny.

Then again, it was a 7-11 worker. That penny probably amounted to a 10% raise for him.

6. yeah but you and I both know she didn't forget
It's not like its hard to confuse a dollar, a quarter and a nickel with a dollar, a quarter and four pennies.

She knew I wouldn't say anything. She had me by my penny-pinching balls and knew I would punk out.

I'm so ashamed. :)

7. up to you
I expect to get my change back but I have a huge penny collection. When it gets too heavy, I put it in a bag, and drop it off at my bank. I'm not very strong so I can't lift much weight but when they get around to counting it and mailing my deposit slip, it's always $30 or more. So, yeah, I tend to collect my pennies.

The cashier may be collecting pennies also but she shouldn't be doing it on company time.

You could make a joke about it, say something about collecting pennies for a little nephew or something, if you wanted to say something quick and light.
