1. First step, Adaware.
http://www.lavasoft.de/

Step two, Spybot Search and Destroy.

Step three, if needed, CWShredder.

All are free.

11. I hadn't updated Spybot in a while. Here's what I found.
I upgraded to the newest version of Spybot S&D and ran it, and it found nothing.

I then upgraded Adaware to the newest edition (Ad-Aware SE Personal) and ran it and it found 122 tracking cookies.

SpywareBlaster,

When you install Spybot, make sure that TeaTimer is running, too.

6. AdAware..
It's a good idea to use several different ones. I have about three on my computer, and they all find different types of stuff. I think LavaSoft makes AdAware, but if not, it's www.ad-aware.com. System MEchanic is good too, then there's SpyHunter... Do a search for these names, I think System Mechanic isn't free though.

8. Ad-aware

First step, Ad-aware. (Almost typed "Frist," must be a bad day.) It's a can of corn to install, set up, and use.

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ is where I got my copy.

Then, when you are settled in, go to Spybot. It is not as easy to configure, but it is aggressive. Or you can try the other products suggested here.

Remember, updates are your friends, just like in virus scanners. Both these products get frequent data-file revisions to keep up with new varieties of spies and adbots.

Unlike virus scanners, different spy detectors co-exist peacefully, and it is a good idea to have more'n one.

I don't know the other products recommended on this thread, but I'm sure they're also fine. These two have kept me 100% clean.

9. here's what i run ...
i highly recommend this free product ... it's call SpywareBlaster ...

if you run it, you won't need to run spyBot ... SpywareBlaster runs all the time and blocks spyware from installing itself on your machine ... it's worked great for me ...

here's a link to download it: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

10. Thank you all
I've downloaded the adaware and the spybot, and the thing to stop them infesting me in the first place and holy moly, no wonder I was having a slowdown. Gee. Overrun with rubbish I was.
