5. I'd get it just to have the "Rockin' In The Free World" video
That song, when it came out (and also signaled the end of Neil's God-Awful "Geffen Records Decade")...it was similar to the buzz over the Eminem "Mosh" song and video. It was an angry, open attack against Poppy Bush...using his own words against him...and it just set up all of the killer stuff that was to follow in Young's career, like "Ragged Glory."

I have vague memories of the video. I remember seeing it in "heavy rotation" on MTV, but it will be nice to see it again after so long.

8. It was in heavy personal rotation in the summer of '89
Everytime I hear anything off of that album, I'm reminded of that summer right before my senior year of college. I was living at home, working ten-hour days, and on my "lunch break" I drove to school for a crappy political science class. I parked on campus with a counterfeit faculty sticker. Funny how music can often evoke such distinctive memories.

12. But that's a really unique element to Neil Young's fans...
...I think there is a higher ratio than most who, as you say, have "such distinctive memories" associated with his music. I know I do, and so does just about every Neil Young fan I've ever met.

It's like the Wesley Snipes - Woody Harrelson bit in "White Men Can't Jump" about being "In The Zone"...sometimes I'll take a track in the car with me, like "Bite The Bullet" from "American Stars & Bars," or "Cowgirl In The Sand," and just CRANK IT, because I wanna be in that zone.

4. Nice playlist
I love Neil Young - I was bummed I couldn't go to the Bridge School benefit again this year. I went a few years ago when the Who headlined (it was the year CSN were supposed to play but Graham Nash broke both his legs in that boating accident so the Who played) - great show and a great time. Seems like something has come up every year since that has prevented me going.

I already have every one of those tracks on the originals. :)

6. Yeah, I have all of the original vinyl...still waiting for the "lost" CDs.
"Time Fades Away" and "Journey Through The Past"...

I saw "Journey Through The Past" when it came out in the ideal environment...with a group of friends in the stoner art-house The Stanford Theatre in Palo Alto, Ca.

The movie should be used in film schools to illustrate what happens when a video camera and a hash pipe end up in the wrong hands.

7. I saw JttP years ago
I'd love to see it again. Somewhere I still have an original poster for that one. Palo Alto would be the place to see it!

Have you seen Human Highway? That is an odd little bit of a movie. I had a bootleg copy years ago, several generations old - finally got a legit copy a few years ago on VHS.

9. I saw a few clips of Human Highway but not the whole movie...
...and, to the degree to which you want to trust reviews, I've read very "lukewarm" ones about "Greendale," but eventually I guess I'll see that one too.

I also suggest the VHS (or DVD if it's available, I don't know) of the "Year Of The Horse" concert film. There is a strange, chilling version of "F*!#in' Up" that's hard to explain. In the middle, he does a spoken, "anecdotal" monologue in a kind of sing-song, "when-I-was-YOUR-age" old storyteller voice. It goes something like:

"And I can remember when I was a boy, and my FATHER SAID TO ME...

He SAID...

SON!

You're just a fuck up! A fuck up"

...this goes on for a few more minutes, he does another little bit about his father, and then the "baying at the moon" close out of Young and Sampedro screaming "Keep fuckin' uuuuuuuuuuuuuuppp" goes on for several minutes...and the customary L-O-N-G feedback-to-silence ending.

It's at moments like this where the Lou Reed - Neil Young connection is evident. I believe Reed once called "Danger Bird" from "Zuma" a "work of genius"...and if you watch "Year Of The Horse," you will see the Rock & Roll Animal in Niel.

Some people only like the "nice" stuff...the "Heart Of Gold," "Old Man," etc. stuff. I like it all. I'm astounded by the depth and range.

10. I watched Year of the Horse alone on a Friday night in a huge theatre
I was orginally in there with 2 other couples, but they eventually slipped out, leaving only me. It was sad, but I enjoyed the movie - I don't know what the hell the other folks' problem was. Some moments were, as you said, tough, but for the most part it was a worthwhile flick. Some excellent live footage.

I found it slightly sad that Neil is still trying to explain the Danny Whitten deal. After nearly 30 years he needs to move on. Yeah, Neil's actions that day killed him, but Danny was his own junkie.

Have to see Greendale yet.

14. I've heard basic takes on the Danny Whitten thing...
...and I think Neil gave himself the burden of "I sent him home, I humiliated him, that's what killed him"...which isn't true. Like you said, Danny made his own world.

11. I LOVE YA NEIL!!! This is great news. First song I ever learned on...
guitar was "Needle and the Damage Done". Incredibly simple yet effective song writer...he is on my mount rushmore of rock legends.

Gotta stop replaying Harvest Moon on those nights I find myself missing the Ex.

Come a little bit closer
Hear what I have to say
Just like children sleepin’
We could dream this night away.

But there’s a full moon risin’
Let’s go dancin’ in the light
We know where the music’s playin’
Let’s go out and feel the night.

Because I’m still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I’m still in love with you
On this harvest moon.

When we were strangers
I watched you from afar
When we were lovers
I loved you with all my heart.

But now it’s gettin’ late
And the moon is climbin’ high
I want to celebrate
See it shinin’ in your eye.

Because I’m still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I’m still in love with you
On this harvest moon.

*sigh* Still not over anything...
