Am I the only one who thinks M. Night Shamylan gets a bad rap?
I just watched "The Village" and thought it was a good movie. Not great, not amazing, but a very enjoyable movie, good solid acting and a good plot.

But everyone I talk to is always dissapointed by his movies...why?

"Sixth Sense" was good, and everyone seems to compare his flicks to this one. "Unbreakable" was good - I liked it, but everyone hates this flick. No idea why. "Signs" was also good - and could have been better if they just didn't show the alien, but other than that a good movie.

And the "The Village" - I thought it was a good solid movie, and I'm glad I watched it.

Thing about Shamylan is that he's consistently good - and that's hard to do.

1. I loved "The Sixth Sense" but wasn't thrilled by "Unbreakable"
I guess I had higher hopes for it, I don't know. I found it to be pretty boring. I've never seen "The Village" or "Signs," but like I said, I really loved "The Sixth Sense."

10. I liked Unbreakable
But then, I was always into comics and mythology and such. Found the basic premise intriguing and the characterization skillful.

2. I really disliked Signs
I just thought it was hokey/unbelievable/whatever. Kind of soured me on seeing The Village.

4. The Village is good
Definitely not as hokey as Signs - Signs could have been better if they just didn't show the alien.

5. bah, yeah so the aliens were a little too easy to beat
but the way they conducted themselves was verry believeable, spooky (especially the night scenes in the cornfield, he put that wind shift in just right) and just about want an invading species would do

18. Signs was one of the DUMBEST movies ever.
That movie alone makes what ever "bad rap" this asshat has worth it.

3. showing the alien was crucial
look what they did with contact, watched that movie all the way to the end....AND THE ALIEN WAS HER FUCKING FATHER, ya just gotta show the alien (and i think hes set up a sequel to signs, cause that little girl with the psychic premonitions went too under the radar for the first)

6. I've always liked his films.
"Unbreakable" is one of my favorites, as well as "Signs." I enjoy the details he puts into his stories. Haven't seen "The Village" yet, but will soon more than likely...after November 2nd.

7. yes
because all of his movies are compared to The Sixth Sense. Dammit, I got paged out of The Village yesterday at the dollar theater. So PM me and tell me what was in the box if you would, what happened at the end.

13. Yeah, I think Unbreakable is much better if you're into comic books,
I've talked to people who don't read comic books and parts didn't make any sense at all to them. I really like it.

The Village.....I don't know....It wasn't horrible, wasn't bad I guess...just wasn't any pay off at the end, and then there's the whole "defying logic without suspending disbelief" stuff going on...

24. I Just Thought It Was Better
With or without comics, it was thought-provoking.

Sixth Sense I could take or leave. Signs bored me.

11. He makes good movies.
There's something about them, the common everyday ring of truth in them, and then he adds the strange.

12. High expectations + sophomore curse
He was an unknown as a writer and a director and people were just overwhelmed. Not only was The Sixth Sense a good movie throughout, I think the ending truly surprised most people (I know I was surprised) and that doesn't happen all that often. The writing was just so tight on that film, I would say flawless.

I liked Unbreakable. I was disappointed by Signs. I think the trailer was scarier than the movie. I haven't seen The Village yet.

14. The Sixth Sense was good
Edited on Sat Oct-23-04 07:54 PM by Downtown Hound
Unbreakable was so/so, Signs was one of the stupidest movies I've seen in years. The Village wasn't terrible, but I saw the ending coming a mile away, even though I hadn't heard anything about it. Mainly because of Shaymalan's history with endings.

All things considered he's mediocre with an occasional spurt of talent. The thing about him that bothers me is that he thinks he's the next Spielberg, and acts like it too.

15. I was psyched to see 'Signs' - it looked freaky as hell
and the first half was, but come one, let's get real here, if aliens are going to take over the Earth they aren't going to use hand-to-hand combat...

17. Loved The Sixth Sense....
I went to see "The Village" in the theater and thought it was incredibly boring. :boring: Very predictable except for one part with Adrian Brody......if you've seen it you know what I am talking about. As for his other two, I haven't seen them.

20. Big holes in "The Village "
At the beginning there was a funeral and the headstone was dated in the late 1800's yet there was no mention of the civil war. America was flooded with guns and people willing to use them after the war. Where were they?

They lived in a little village with a border that nobody was allowed to cross, but there was no logging to build houses or collect firewood, no cotton fields and few (if any) sheep to make clothes.

What wasn't there stood out so much that every time the camera shot off into the distance I half expected to see power lines.

When Dad took his blind daughter to the shed did anybody else expect to see a car in there?

I don't regret seeing it but I won't bother renting it later.

The Sixth Sense was great (eventhough I figured out the big surprise) Unbreakable, I thought it was very good (I'm not into to comic books and still liked it) Signs I like it.
