1. No fair (kidding)
You've split the R&B vote. Oh, heck, maybe I'll just vote twice.

2. On second thought (more seriously)
Recent R&B really is quite different from the classics and not nearly as good.

Got a serious soft spot for 80's/techno/dance music
Edited on Fri Sep-12-03 12:35 PM by NewYorkerfromMass
you should see my Napster harvest
(The Fixx, Flock of Seagulls, Depeche Mode, Erasure, OMD...)
(One example of One Hit Wonders: "Lawnchairs" by Our Daughter's Wedding)
Yup, Napster was a great thing.

Now I think this should have been post #17 which reminds me of... THE HEAVEN SEVENTEEN!!! :)

WHY did they remove that function of making a html version of the playlist in winamp3???

I would have shown my entire 80s mp3 collection, over 190 songs. And all "hits" :D

btw "i ran" by a flock of seagulls is the BEST EVER!

26. AFOS 'Nightmares' and 'Telecommunication' good too!
Saw them live in 1982 at a small club here in NY. IIRC they were 2 guitars a bass and keyboard (no drums). Even so, I definitely suffered some permanent hearing loss at that one. Those were some SERIOUS power chords they were hitting in "I Ran".

5. Classical music
you left out the best. Listening to Gershwin right now "Bess you is my woman now". Or Beethoven, or Mozart.

You can't get any better than that.

you left out the American musical
all those wonderful Oscar and Hamerstein musicals of the 40's and 50's and Showboat.

You also left out Jazz.

I could go for Coltrane, Sinatra or Brubeck any day.

Come on folks, there was music before 1964!!!!!

12. It's not your fault
and not meant as a personal criticism or anything but let me just get on my soapbox for a minute.

With the budget cuts in education it seems to me that (classical) musical appreciation has gone completely away. Very few younger people are even aware of the fine musical history of even the American culture. I think every child should know some Gershwin, some of the dead German classics and some show music. I'm sorry that Jazz is not also as well known as it should be with fine artists like Chick Corea still performing.

We are becoming a society that is ignorant of art. I don't say this to dis popular music, not at all. I like most kinds of popular music as well. It's just that historical perspective is so cool and that is what being an educated person is all about.

Where is the Jazz on this list? Jazz was one of the first forms of music to piss off the establishment (because it was "black" music).

....just have too many notes.
The human sensory system can only absorb so many notes...
you'll have to take some out!

15. maybe change the title to "popular" music
if there's still time.

Wish there was a better term for "classical" music, because I happen to hate the "Classical" musical period (Mozart etc.) and prefer Baroque (Bach etc.) and 20th century

27. "Alternative" 90's rock
Beginning with Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana & Pearl Jam (a crossover). There was a renaissance in music from about 1991-1996. Lots of creativity. Lots of one-hit wonders, too. But a great rock sound.

Then the Cardigans came and ruined the party.

32. I like different types depending on my mood, but no one is my favorite
I do despise rap, although I appreciate it as music young people listen to to piss off their parents, like Heavy Metal in my day. It's just not my music.
I like some country, but not much. Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn (only because of the movie "Coal Miner's Daughter") are about it for me.

37. Here's something odd.....
There're still a lot of people who listen to, and radio stations that play, pop music from the 70's, the 60's, and even some from the 50's. Now when I was a high school/college kid, in the 60's, that would've been equivalent to the radio stations playing pop music from the 30's, the 20', and even the 10's. Maybe I wasn't paying attention, but I don't recall that happening. Why is that? 60's music was that much better than 20's music?
