1. I am gonna have to go with Duran.
I worked for them. I saw Roger play every night. He was a friggin' machine. He was amazing.

So good to have the lads back in original nick. So good indeed.

3. The Police
Stewart Copeland defined The Police's sound when they were at their best. Rare for a drummer.

15. He'd Be My Pick
If i went back a bit farther and included bands from the 70's who were still active in the 80's, i'd have to add Bill Bruford.

And, as someone else mentioned below, Terry Bozzio is awfully good!

I hate Iron Maiden, so I can't comment on his work with them, but he was awesome with Pat Travers band.

40. Neal Peart is the best of all time.
Why no Rush on this poll?

Tommy Lee from Motley Crue is a close second, and Alex Van Halen should be in there somewhere.

of the 80's. He's still being voted the best all around drummer by readers of modern drummer magazine every year. If you haven't seen him, your missing a great show. Steve Smith's Vital Information.

On edit he was also with Journey, I'm not sure he counts anymore...

12. Phil Collins and Chester Thompson are both great drummers!
Yeah, Genesis started to go downhill a bit in the 80s, but Phil and Chester are still both amazing drummers.

That being said, I can't vote, because I just can't decide between Copeland, Bozzio, Collins and Thompson. (Oddly enough, that's also the name of my law firm.)

Now I am really confused. I guess I don't understand your taste. Maybe I need a breakdown. ;)

I could see hating Sting as a solo ( which I do not), but how can you hate one of the quintessential powerpop trios of the 80s and with all that great jazz and music skill? Or were they just too popular for ya?

23. Stewart Copeland.
Frustratingly, Gordon reeled him in too much. One of the reasons the band melted. Amazingly kinetic. Did some interesting soundtrack stuff (rumble fish, etc) since then.

Sorry, but when you drunk-drive and get your arm cut off, that's a little thing we call instokarma. There's a certain novelty act quality to Lefty's subsequent drumming, but it's like choosing Terry Fox over Edwin Moses.

All of the above, though, could not lick the ballsack of one Keith Moon.

25. I gotta go with 'other'
and say 'pretty much any band Prairie Prince played with,' which is several, including the Tubes.

Although as much as I hate Missing Persons, their drummer played with Frank Zappa, so he had to be excellent. Zappa never hired any dead weight.

Yeah, Rush's Neil Pert is missing off of that list... So is Keith Moon but what the hey, most people think of him as a 1970's drummer.

31. That's the only reason I went with Missing Persons.
Bozzio is really a 70's drummer, but being MP was an 80's creation, I thought he best fit the question. Neil Peart is the pioneer of prog rock drumming and set the standard by which all others must be measured.

seriously I agree with Copeland. ALthough session drummers have some serious skills. But the best drummers in my book are jazz guys.

42. Is this a trick question?
I vote for Stewart Copeland as the quintessential '80s drummer.

Arguably Phil Collins is a "better" drummer, but the work that by my lights proves he's "better" is his '70s work (with Brand X as well as classic Genesis).

My take on Neil Peart is, he's Keith Moon sober. If Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey wanted to do the Ninth Annual Who Farewell Tour, they could do a lot worse than to hire Neil and Geddy as this year's rhythm section. (Geddy would have to lose the Steinberger, however.)

43. Though not technically an 80's drummer
His career spanned nearly 3 decades (including the 80's) and he was the quintessential session drummer. At the height of his career he was dubbed the "perfect drummer". His discography includes the likes of Eric Clapton to Mel Torme, Frank Zappa to Thelma Houston, John Lennon to John Travolta, Steely Dan to Carol Bayer Sager, Alice Cooper to The Carpenters. He was not English but one of Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs. Unfortunately the madness that plagued him most of his life culminated in the murder of his mother and in 1993 he died of cancer in prison for the crime.

Jim Gordon
