Music you proudly like that isn't cool in indie circles
This is not knocking indie music. There is much to enjoy there. But I'm curious to know what you love that isn't appreciated there. For one, I love the younger pop/rock artists (Michelle Branch, Avril Lavigne, Vanessa Carlton, Lucy Woodward, Lillix, Rachel Farris, Skye Sweetnam, Maren Ord, Fefe Dobson, Maria Mena, Katy Rose, Lindsay Lohan, newer Hilary Duff, etc.) Bonnie McKee is young, but her pop music is a different kind. I also like some dance music (Madonna, Kylie Minogue,) some mainstream country, Phil Collins, and some mainstream R&B. I know I didn't list everything.

What about you?

1. Hardly anything I like is cool in indie circles.
Power pop, jump blues, roadhouse country. Basically anything you'd find on a jukebox in 1966.

2. Solar Radio had mainstream appeal,
if they had proper promotion. They could have been as big as U2.

10. They did have the potential,
but I don't think they ever recovered from being kicked off the Echo and the Bunnymen tour three shows in.

13. Well, if by "kicked off," you mean...
"thrown in jail after Tim Ahern tried to molest McCullouch in a Belfast pub," then yes.

4. Indie music isn't always cool
Edited on Fri Oct-01-04 01:23 PM by Cats Against Frist
alot of it is no more technically difficult than the pop star stuff. That said, I was at a bar where someone asked me if I was banished to an island, and could take one CD, which one would I take.

Now, my social circle is pretty much all writers and artists, so everyone named something that no one had ever heard of. I have often answered this question "Thick as a Brick," by Jethro Tull or "The Rite of Spring," by Stravinsky, but, in that instance, my inner 9-year-old answered: Duran Duran's "Rio."

The questioner said, "no, seriously."

I said: "I'm not kidding."

I also like commercial rap, like Nelly, DMX, Outkast, 50 cent, though POLITICALLY and INTELLECTUALLY I am against the lyrics, images and culture that surrounds those artists, and particularly their videos -- I can't friggin' help it. My booty shakes. EDIT: Plus, for some reason, when I listen to rap music, it raises my self esteem.

You think you're shit, butter? Hop in front of this toast.

8. People give you shit for liking Beck and Radiohead?????
What the fuck is that about? Those are both examples of people that got signed to a major label because they're INCREDIBLY TALENTED, not because they fill some marketing niche.

12. I get more shit for Radiohead
I just got some from my punk loving brother. I really can't figure out why, but I think it's just the commercial aspect.

Beck is often described to me as a cut-and-paste hack, which makes no sense to me whatsoever. I always suggest they listen to 'Mutations' and 'Sea Change' if they think that way.

11. Big time "indie" fan here, but...
I remember when liking "alternative" meant you couldn't like hip hop.

Up until recently, I've always liked hip hop.

As I get older, I find myself liking stuff from my childhood or adolescent years...even some cheesy pop stuff, that I know would be frowned upon.

Who cares what other people think about your musical taste. Everything goes in cycles, and whatever they think is cool now will be considered stale in a few years anyway.

I love my eclectic taste in music. It keeps me happy. And that's all that matters anyway.

20. About Hilary Duff
I found out that her CD was released by Hollywood Records, which refused to let Miramax release Fahrenheit 9/11. I also found from the same article that she doesn't follow politics much, which is better than Britney's blind support for Bush, but I don't think I can support Hollywood Records by buying the CD. I'm trying to dislike her new one as much as her first CD, and I might end up that way (I'll always admit "Fly" is good.)
