This is my annual 'Take a bunch of kids camping weekend'.
Every year a friend of mine and I take a bunch of kids camping overnight to the Platte River State Park to spend today and tomorrow outside. The biggest crowd we ever had was 30. This year we may be down to 11.

This year's surprise additions are two little boys (that neither one of us have ever met) who's parent's are going through a very nasty divorce. The dad's an abusive husband/father who's also a drug user. The mother, well I don't know. I've been told that she's a really nice person who just has a lot of problems. Their ages are 10 and 6.

Every year we've taken kids who've had problems, either emotionally or who's home life would qualify as questionable at best. I always panic before we go, worrying about what ifs. Except for the time we had the 30 kids, some of which we just plain hoodlums, everything has always been pretty much okay. The really young kids just love it, being able to run around all night in the woods. We sleep in teepees, and they love that too. Campfires, the whole nine yards.

I have to leave in a half hour, anyone got any quick ideas on what we can to to make the trip more fun? Suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

2. What a sweetheart you are to take the time...
Have a good time. Check back in when you get back and share your anecdotes. I'm sure you will have plenty.

3. Well time to go. What I wouldn't do for a bottle of Valium right now.
Don't worry about letting them get dirty. That's one thing that they never fail to do. Especially two years ago when it rained all night. Teepees and rain in the middle of nowhere. Want to know something funny? Not one kid, not one, complained. It was just business as usual. And the teepees leaked like hell.

That was the year when I discovered how resilient and strong kids could be. And I think we had 17 of them that year, three under 5.

Oh well, until tomorrow night, bye bye.
