Having screws taken out of my knee on 9-11. Freaky, huh?
I have had screws in my knee since last December, when a go-cart and I missed a bridge and fell into a creek...the go-cart won, I lost.

I had a broken tib-fib at the knee, which was put back together with screws.

Lately, I have had nervy sensations and inflamation in my knee, so my doc will take my screws out on Thursday-- WHOOPEE! I won't have to watch the day-long 9-11 broadcasts because I will be somewhere between earth and heavenly oblivion.

Anyone ever had "hardware" (what my doc calls it) taken out? Is it a painful process? He said he would put me under to do it. I heard some people have screws removed while conscious (ouch!).

I am scared, but don't want to admit it.

1. Does he use a screw driver?
I've never had the pleasure, myself. I'll send white light.

:o

2. I had it done...

I had a screw removed from my upper tibia. It was anchoring my reconstructed ACL, and like you, I was having nervy sensations and pain. Don't be scared -- it won't be as bad as you think. I had it done under a local anesthetic, and it only hurt for a day or so, and not even very much at that. Good luck!

On edit: And yes, he did use an electric screw driver thingy.

5. Oh god that is scary...
this is a gross question, but when he unscrewed it, how did you stand it??? How could you deal with the sight of it.

I was such a baby when I had my knee reconstructed, when I was in the recovery room, that my doc probably realized he would rather put me under than hear me scream again! LOL.

9. I didn't look...
I was lying down on the operating table, and couldn't see what was going on -- that was fine with me. If I remember right, I think he also gave me a sedative to keep me from freaking. It really went fine, though, and I probably could have handled it without the sedative. There was no pain at all, but I could hear the electric tool he was using. I don't know how many screws you'll have removed, but I only had one, and it turned out to be a pretty minor procedure -- I didn't even have to stay overnight in the hospital. At any rate, it will surely be easier for you than your first operation. For one thing, your injuries have gone through some healing and your body probably isn't on red alert anymore. I'll be thinking of you.

10. The other thing about it was...

The incision required to remove the screw was tiny. They didn't have to open my knee up or anything like that. Just one small slit to get the screwdriver thing in. It only required one or two stitches to close it, and it was over within minutes. I got up and walked out. Piece o' cake!

4. Was kind of "ga - ga" and sick after I had temp dental work put in
Edited on Sun Sep-07-03 11:28 PM by Valerie5555
not because of the pain, but because of my gag reflex and my dentist would figure either way the temp dental work procedure would make me :puke:.

Anyways good luck with the screw removal.

Maybe I will also get lucky with avoiding the anniversary commemorations of IT since as always on Thursdays,I like to be "out and about" rather early in the morning to get to my class (as in by around 7ish though the class doesn't start 'till 10 AM) and I would no doubt by day's end I may be too pooped to watch any commemorations.

On edit because I had knock - gas when I had temp dental work put in.

8. Oooo...gas is good!
I love that stuff...wish I had a canister in my living room! But then I would do nothing but sit on the couch and giggle.

Hope your dental work is fine...I am sure my knee will be.

11. It went well
and I didn't mind having the permanent crowns put in for at least I didn't need any knockout gas that made me :puke: further.
