Favorite Boston Patriot? (no, I don't mean the sports team)
Yeah, I know - the "New England" Patriots used to be known as the Boston Patriots - but I'm not talking about them. I'm talking about the real patriots - the American revolutionaries who helped found this wonderful country of ours, most of whom were Sons of Liberty.

For me, it's a close race between John Adams and Ben Franklin. Adams, one of the most disliked presidents of all-time, was one of the very few who advocated the fair trial by jury of the British soldiers alleged to have killed five Boston citizens unjustifiably at the so-called "Boston Massacre." Plus, his uncle makes some bitchin' beer (contrary to popular belief, the Sam Adams behind the beer was not the same person as the Son of Liberty Sam Adams. The younger Sam Adams actually failed in the brewery business passed on to him by his father, who brewed the first Sam Adams Boston Lagers).

Ben Franklin was just, to put it bluntly, a friggin' genius. He's perhaps the most oft-quoted man in history.

2. Benny!!!
I love Ben Franklin! I think he was the second hippie (right after Jesus)... A great statesman, inventor and an all around hell of a guy (not the greatest husband though). I've read several biographies on him and I'm always left amazed by his list of accomplishments.

Next would be Sam Adams...for the beer alone!

3. Yeah, but Sam Adams failed miserably at the brewing industry
It's one of the reasons he became such a political activist - he had boatloads of free time on his hands.

Sam Adams rocks anyway (not that I'd know, being under 21 and all...) :toast:

9. Actually he was born in Boston...
and then moved down to Philly...when he was a young man, Boston was a very conservative town so he set off to see the world and ended up in Pennsylvania

7. His quote on giving up liberty
Edited on Fri Sep-17-04 09:11 PM by Cousinit13
"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

This should be our battle cry!

BTW welcome to DU :hi:

5. Will Pitt. The tradition lives on.
Who knows? Maybe he's channeling one (or more) of those better-known, long-departed Boston patriots...

11. There are too many
great men from that era to consider a favorite. There are so many whose contribution isn't as well known as others, but who deserve every bit as much adulation.

Among those who I think of are Nathan Hale, Tom Paine, William Prescott, Paul Revere, Crispus Attucks, Ethan Allen, Abigail Adams, John Adams.....so many others I can't name right now. It took a lot of people, genuine defiance and true spirit of liberty to escape the tyranny of George III. Now, we're trying to escape the tyranny of another "King" George. Funny.....we're the patriots this time, even if it hasn't crossed our minds.
