Motorcyclist Allegedly Broke Speed Limit By 140 MPH
Motorcyclist Allegedly Broke Speed Limit By 140 MPH

POSTED: 2:05 pm EDT September 21, 2004

WABASHA, Minn. -- A motorcyclist in Minnesota has been arrested for speeding -- while allegedly going faster than 200 mph.

The speed limit was 65 miles an hour on U.S. Highway 61 near Wabasha. Police said Samuel Tilley was breaking that limit by 140 mph. They said a state patrol pilot who was flying overhead clocked Tilley doing 205 miles an hour while racing with another motorcyclist.

Pilot Al Loney said the bike was traveling nearly twice as fast as his plane. He radioed ahead to another state trooper, who pulled the two cyclists over.

Only the faster one was arrested.

6. I once knew a guy with...
... a Kawasaki drag bike that would do the 1/4-mile in 10 seconds and trap speeds of 133 mph. I have no doubt that there are bikes out there capable of 200 mph. I also have no doubt there are also lunatics determined to go that fast on the open road. Blow a tire at those speeds and you'll get more than rug burns.

7. Modified, yes
Though the Kawasaki ZX12R and the Suzuki Hayabusa (sp?) are in the 190 range right out of the box, I think. Put a turbo or nitrous on a 180 mph bike, and yeah, 200+ is possible. Don't know how fairings hold up at 200 mph (wind speed), and I would think that taking a bug to the face shield would feel like Mike Tyson gave you a slap.

18. The bikes where you're sitting back instead of hunching over
look a lot more comfortable to me. These ovbiously aren't intended for cruising or long distance trips.

5. That is such a pretty road
I can't imagine how much of it you would experience if you laid down the bike at 200+ mph.

12. Have I mentioned today how much I hate idiot motorcyclists?
Was this before or after he popped a wheelie on a public road? Before of after he weaved between gridlocked traffic at 50 mph?

100 bucks says he has a mullet.

16. I've been wanting to take a high performance motorcycle up to NY State
for a couple months. Unlike these two, I'd be aware that I'm new at riding and that I'd have no use for such speeds.

Of course, I'd probably open it up a bit on some long country roads - perhaps a deer whistle would be in order.
