Dangit! Almost melted my tea kettle!
Put the damn thing on to heat water, it never whistled (and it has a hella whistle) so I burned all the water out, and I bet it cook, on high, for a good 20 minutes or more without any water in it.

DAMN!!

Now the thing is cooling off, and making the cracking sounds that cooling metal makes.

A minute or so after I took it off the burner I scraped around on the bottom inside of it with a wooden chopstick - it kept burning off any wood touching the metal. Sparks and smoke! That f-er was hot!

You think it's still usable? I have a feeling it isn't. The inside bottom looks all wrong, like metal does when heated to too high a temperature.

And I've been thinking it would be nice to have a new one... but still, this was in excellent shape, and nothing wrong with it, so I hadn't bought a new one. That would just be wasteful.

1. Anything you use water boiled in it now for
is likely to taste disgusting.

8. That's what I was afraid of

Yucko.

In it's cooled state, it looks terrible.

Looks like what we used to end up with after doing catastrophic testing of metals in mat. sci. and etc. in college.

2. You could search re-sale shops for a replacement.
I found an old Revere Ware copper kettle for $5. I just shined it up, cleaned it out and it's good as new.

I wonder if your whistler wore out.

3. I think I had it on too loosely
I popped the top lid and the whistler off with the chopstick, and the whistler came right off no hassle. usually, even when I haven't near-melted the pot, the whislter comes off stiffly.

I'd love a copper one!

I want to slowly evolve all my cooking stuff into copper. Mmmmmm!

4. check at places like Marshall's and Ross.
You can get some great deals on great cookware etc, even on stuff like Le Creuset etc.

I've seen some beauty-ful kettles there for a fraction of what they cost everywhere else.

Copper kettles are purty.

6. True!
You are correct. In fact, I need a Le Creuset dutch oven...there's the outlet mall in San Marcos, but I bet Marshall's would be cheaper.

5. Copper is good.
In fact, I have two old pots my mother gave me. Again, Revere Ware. They have copper bottoms and get hot in no time. There's a Mexican arts store here that sells hand-hammered copper bowls. Beautiful, but expensive.
