Toronto Star article about the Daily Show -- brilliant.
Only the jester speaks the truth
Journalism is the biggest joke of all

VINAY MENON

Jon Stewart claims he's a fake newsman. But these days, his impact on politics and media is undeniably real.

On Tuesday, The Daily Show With Jon Stewart (Comedy Network, 11 p.m. tonight and CTV, 12:05 a.m.) welcomed Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, his first television interview since the Swift boat contretemps.

"How are you holding up?" Stewart asked Kerry. "This has been a, it's been a rough couple weeks ... I watch a lot of the cable news shows. So I understand that apparently you were never in Vietnam."

The sardonic quip triggered laughter from both the audience and Kerry.

2. I thought the Daily Show would go in the toilet when Craig Kilborn left.
I am so happy to have been very, very wrong. It is ten times the show it used to be, although I do still miss "5 Questions".

3. "The point of view of this show is we're passionately opposed...
to bullshit."

EXACTLY why I never miss The Daily Show! I'm addicted to no BS!

4. Did anyone else see
George "Stepontopofthis" yesterday reviewing Kerry's appearance on TDS. . .? He played the clip of the "Do you or have you ever flip flopped?" And Kerry's joking response, (something like)"I've flip flopped and I've flip flapped. . ."

Then Mister astute pundit puzzled, "I can't understand why he would perpetuate such a thing," without including what Kerry's next statement was . . .(again paraphrasing) "I don't see anything compassionately consevative in huge deficits or drilling at the National Wildlife refuge at Anwar, I don't think any of these labels apply."

So infuriating.

7. The last paragraph is a classic:
"In this age of spin and stupidity, where politicians and their pliable cheerleaders are the merchants of bullshit, his attitude explains why The Daily Show has become must-see TV."

8. Koppel's missed appearance on The Daily Show??

I've been wondering why Koppel didn't show for his scheduled appearance on 'The Daily Show'. They ended up having NO guest that night. Very odd. I wonder if the Nightline interaction was part of the reason. (Stewart *skewered* Koppel in that one, rightfully calling into question the "mainstream" news media's credibility and effectively telling Koppel that he, Ted, wasn't doing his job in calling out the BS.)
