Former "Facts of Life" Star says "Hot Saucing" your child is Biblical
Edited on Mon Aug-23-04 03:51 AM by A HERETIC I AM
{snip}
The latest corporal punishment fad in the fundamentalist world, "hot saucing" consists of putting a drop of a fiery condiment on a child's tongue. According to an Aug. 10 article in The Washington Post by freelance writer Alison Buckholtz, some conservative Christian parents are using the controversial discipline technique on children as young as 2.

In case any fundamentalist parents are in doubt, "hot saucing" proponents are quick to point out that the Bible approves of the unorthodox punishment. A leading proponent of "hot saucing," former child actress Lisa Whelchel, explains it all in her book Creative Correction: Extraordinary Ideas for Everyday Discipline, published by Focus on the Family and the evangelical publisher Tyndale House

Whelchel's book provides passages from the Bible that she says back up all of her discipline techniques. For example, she also recommends pinching a child's tongue with a clothespin for swearing, saying it is supported by a passage in the Book of Proverbs that reads, "The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but a perverse tongue will be cut out."

"Hot saucing" has plenty of critics. Carleton Kendrick, a family therapist contacted by The Post, noted that hot sauces come in different strengths. The most fiery brands, he noted, can burn a child's esophagus and cause the tongue to swell, making a youngster choke.

1. And we wonder why...
films as sadistic as "The Passion of the Christ" appeal to these people. They're sadistic. They had suffering foisted on them, and now they feel the need to make all of us suffer as they have.

9. I was just thinking about that.
There is biblical support for stoning those breaking the Sabbath. Does she do that to her kids for playing on the Sabbath? There are a whole host of other commandments in the OT, much more obvious than hotsaucing or pinching tongues. OK, who wants to hold her while I do this stuff to her?

Her victims' er - kids' names are "Tucker" :puke: , "Haven" :puke::puke:, "Clancy" (?)

Here she is with her "ex-gay" (?) husband...

Steve

I met Steve in a prayer group at my church fifteen years ago. We became very good friends and were married July 9th, 1988. (There is much more to the story and not enough room to tell it. If you are really interested, I write all about it in my new book "The Facts of Life and Other Lessons My Father Taught Me.")

Steve is brilliant, good-looking and he loves to serve... an awesome combination. He holds down two jobs, which enables me to be a stay-at-home mom. Steve works as the Information Technologies Director at The Church on the Way plus, he is the Convention Producer and Meeting Planner for the Foursquare denomination. He's also one manly motorhome driver! Grunt. Grunt.

(snip)

Homeschooling has been an important part of our family for years. Other than one year in a traditional school setting, we have homeschooled from the beginning, and it is our desire to homeschool through to the end.

Many of you have asked for information regarding homeschooling. I am writing a book entitled, "I'm Thinking About Homeschooling"  but it won't be published until 2003. Until then, I have made a list of some of my favorite things on the "My Favorites" page including homeschool sites, resources and products. I hope you find it helpful. Just go to "My Story" and then click "My Favorites".

Yes, homeshooling IS a good way to keep Tucker, Haven and Fancy away from those nigras who don't know how to act as white as "Tootie"

You go, Blair!

11. When Lisa Whelchel was so fat on "Facts"....
They should've "hot sauced" her to make her lose weight. Boy, she was sure coddled when she was getting so porky that the tabloids were calling the sitcom "Fats Of Life", and nobody inflicted corporal punishment on her. And lemme tell ya, gaining weight is a lot more serious than swearing...nobody every had a stroke or heart attack from saying the F word, y'know.

15. Crack a medical book
OK, lemme explain it in terms simple enough for Dubya to understand:

Lisa Whelchel thinks hot sauce and clothespins are proper punishment for doing something relatively harmless, i.e., swearing.

Lisa Whelchel is obviously guilty of doing something much worse: letting her weight get out of control, causing insurance rates to go up for those of us who take care of ourselves, not to mention causing more of a burden for already overworked medical personnel (because the day will no doubt come when she eats her way to a stroke, heart attack, or any of the other weight-related maladies, such as diabetes).

She thinks it's bad to swear, yet OK to do all this...therefore she's a hypocrite, and should either have her "punishments" done to her...or else maybe she should quit being such a self-indulgent sadist, and practice what she preaches (i.e., Christian values don't include selfishness).

16. Lisa Welchel apparently has some huge problems...
judging however from the pic in which you surmised that she is "FAT"... you are way over-blowing it as a problem. Even if she WAS overweight, your insults are way off base and degrade every person here and anywhere who struggles with a weight problem.

Now THAT is simple enough for Dubya to understand, though I'm sure you won't get it.

20. Oh please,
She's *maybe* 10 pounds overweight in that picture. Certainly she's far from obese and therefore unlikely to suffer the health problems you so melodramatically outline.

And my parents stuck dish soap in my mouth when I swore. At least hot sauce is a food. Does that make them self-indulgent sadists? Oh, and they really *are* obese, let's lynch 'em.

22. Please, such petty issues are unnecessary and ignorant,
Do some research on the toxins in our environment and you will learn where most of the weight problems in this country are coming from...ie, mercury, sugar substitutes etc.

Please get educated scientifically before you give out such arrogant, superior judgments about someone's weight. check out sites like Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins, Mayo clinic, allrefer.com, about.com, thyroid toxins, mercury toxins, ect.... Then come back and try to make such uncaring, ignorant statements.

Oh, welcome to du, hope you can learn some compassion and empathy from some of the more caring educated people here.

Not trying to be a *itch, but am fed up with the ignorance that people get from Ladies Home Journal, The View, the main stream media etc.

It's all smoke and mirror's to distract from what poisons our government has allowed their cooperate buddies to inflict on us. Wake up.

33. I have to agree with Misunderestimator....
...you are very way off base to criticize someone for their weight? What next, you going to judge us DUers who are battling weight - we'll you better not because you'll have me to deal with.

You need to get over your close-minded attitude about weight and what is the 'ideal weight for someone'. Judging from the pictures on her website - Lisa Whelchel looks pretty healthy and fit. Why you are being judgemental on this issue (when there are so many better ones to choose from) is beyond me

What up with that? I thought everything that Christ said which contradicts the old testament should replace the OT. Sounds like they just want to hang their child abuse on God.

And one more time, home schooling is so often a cover for child abusers and should be a red flag in every community.

58. A further breakdown of said people:
Kirk Cameron: Played a snotty selfish oversexed brat on that dumb show 'Growing Pains' and didn't get anywhere else afterward. I can't imagine why... </sarcasm>

Willie Ames: Whereever Scott Baio managed to find a pitiful-at-best role, he wasn't too far behind. A pair of bad actors to say the least, when Scott disappeared, he left to go draw half-naked urine-yellow colored superheroes peddling Bibles because he couldn't find anything else to do. From adolescent slop like "Zapped!" to the incredibly dorky "Charles in Charge", one could only wince in horror at these two who always gave the impression they were a couple. Well, the Bible thing blows that theory out of the water, doesn't it?

Stephen Baldwin: Who?

Chuck Norris: He can appear in two-bit karate movies and peddle a cheap plastic overpriced exerciser, be he ain't no legend...

Tiffany Brissette: Lovely show Small Wonder... they chose her well, she is a robot... I feel more sorry for her than anyone else.

MC Hammer: His music (if you can call it that) is something a 3 year old could do and whose pompous self-aggrandizing lyrics couldn't even be matched by a 2 year old (and all 2 year olds can say "Me me me! I am so great! Me me me!")! He also ripped off Rick James and (the thing formerly known as) Prince for his repetitive mule diarrhea he tried to pass off as 'music' (that even a $25 Casio synth keyboard found at Sears could do better when you press that little button that adds the repetitive tinkle-tune music in the background). Waaaaaaaaaay overrated and hardly talented by any means.

They forget that once Christ died, we stopped following the Old Testament rules. If we didn't we'd still be sacrificing animals for our sins, and God would still be a horribly sadistic, jealous, warring god. THEY DON'T KNOW THEIR OWN FUCKING IDIOLOGY!! ONce Christ died he mellowed out and started actually loving his children and enjoying us. UGH. I wish they knew their own Lord. It makes me sick the things people do in his name. This shit is sadistic. And when they get tried for murdering one of their children by "hot saucing," they'll start praying and think they're just being percecuted.

54. Another thing about this realllllly bothers me...
Teachers are often the unbiased observer who "catches" familial abuse, and reports it..

Kids of fundies who are homeschooled, have NO ONE in their corner if Mom &/or Dad are "punishing" them...

Who is their advocate??

55. My Mom Used to "Hot Sauce" Me
Edited on Mon Aug-23-04 11:36 AM by GiovanniC
For swearing or talking back or lying.

This was when I was fairly young... say, from maybe 4 or 5 up to about 11 or 12ish.

I'm 24 now.

57. Having Had the Unique Experience of BOTH
I'd prefer the hot sauce, quite frankly. I hated the soap so much worse.
