What does everyone think of Roger Ebert and his reviews?
Even though I don't have the same taste exactly as him, I always find his reviews interesting and usually they can give a new perspective. Although when it comes to the silly comedy genre, or perhaps comedy in general (other than the awful Romantic Comedy category) he's utterly and viciously biased against anything that comes from it. It's kind of rediculous.

Anyway what's your opinion of him?

1. Critics are self loathing, "I hate everything" Kinda people.
And Ebert is one of the worst. If its not a woody allen flick, or a movie with some overrated star, forget it. He'll hate it.

7. That's simply not true
and a minimal amount of investigation will prove it. Watch his show or go to his website, don't just make absurd attacks.

10. Just an opinion.
I'll go see something based on what the plot sounds like. I don't like people telling me an opinion, because like assholes, we all have one and they're all different.

15. You made a statement of "fact" which was incorrect
You may not like his opinions, but you can't say he only likes Woody Allen movies or big star vehicles. He likes lots of off-beat indie stuff as well.

12. I second that your basically wrong. The only movies I find he unfairly
hate's as a group are the Sandler/Rob Shneider/frat pack genre of movies.

Most bad movies in the drama or sci-fi or thriller category he overrates. Just in recent memory he gave that suckfest I, Robot a really good review.

20. I third your opinion... Roger's smart, insightful (& though I don't always
agree), I always appreciate his point of view. Not at all like most of the pea brains doing reviews out there, IMO. Roger's one of us, for sure-- a dedicated anti-Repug very anti-Bush progressive Democrat.

2. My opinion of Roger Ebert is stellar.
I saw him in 2000 saying how he thought Gore would make a better Pres.

And he gave a very decent review of F9/11..I don't really watch him that much to hear what his weekly reviews of movies are. But if I see a DVD and it has a ..thumb or two up on it..I will try it out.

4. Ebert's good.
Not too snooty like most critics. I also think that any critic who is a huge Russ Meyer's fan (no pun intended) is someone knows how to have a little fun with his flicks.

6. Me too, although I disagree with him often
I still think he should have crapped all over Matrix Reloaded, for example.

8. He's usually very good.
if I'm reading something like rotten tomatoes, his review is usually the first I go to. Out of all the critics in the popular media, his are usually the best. But every now and then he's way, way off.

That said, I prefer reading the kind of review that's more intelligent that what you read in the Entertainment section of the sunday paper. Small, independant weekly papers often have very good critics. I like to read a long critique and still be unsure about whether the critic liked it or not.

9. He's a pretty easy "thumbs up" usually
so I use him to gauge what to stay away from. If he goes thumbs down, it's a pretty good bet the movie sucks.

14. I'm talking more about his print reviews
In which he rates with the traditional 1/2 star to 4 star system. You can read them by clicking the "external reviews" section on any nation-wide movie pretty much on IMDB.

recomends some movie that bites. A lot of people don't know he writes
a regular opinion column for his Chicago paper.

Here is a fairly interesting interview with Ebert.

By the way, hated The Matrix.

23. I find...
... that with a few exceptions, I agree with Ebert's reviews. There is a certain type of movie he simply does not like that I find passable, but overall he is pretty fair.

Rarely have I ever found a movie he really likes to be lacking.

your thinkin of his buddy, Gene Siskel. He's the one that died. Roger Ebert is still alive, but I heard he had some health problems recently.

29. Ebert Was Treated for Cancer
of the salivary glands, I think; immediately after his surgery his mouth sagged on one side. I believe I recall reading that the treatment was successful and he is expected to make a full recovery. I hope so - I enjoy his movie reviews, even when I don't agree with him. He *likes* movies, which is refreshing; so many others are either talentless hacks who'll shill for any piece of crap, or snobs who have forgotten the value of pointless fun.

26. While I disagree with Ebert's opinion on some movies
-which you will inevitability with even your most respected film reviewer-I've always valued his insight and perspective on the latest movie releases and enjoy reading his reviews. I often read his reviews on quite a regular basis before considering whether or not to purchase a movie
