My CPU, memory, hard drives and peripheral cards have all lasted four years. I have lost a couple of CD-ROMS and a floppy but those are cheap.

13. What are you talking about?
I've had a few cheap sound and ethernet cards die after a few years of use, but almost anything I've spent more than $35 on seems to last until I decide to replace it (hard drives excluded.)

personally I love being able to put together, tweak, enhance and upgrade a system for well under a grand that wipes the floor with anything apple has available at that price point. to each his own.

31. The only difference between Macs and PCs these days is the CPU
They BOTH use almost identical architectures, and have since the mid-90s. The only real difference between the machines these days is that Macs use PowerPC processors, while Wintel boxen still use chips based on Intel's x86 instruction set.

Hell, even OS X was built on top of FreeBSD, which is an x86 port of Berkeley's BSD Lite 4.4 OS (which was originally built by Bill Joy of Sun Microsystems and a group of volunteers at UC Berkeley in the 1970s & 1980s, when they needed an open-source Unix-like OS.

Everything else is just a matter of installing the right drivers.

6. Depends on your needs
You can get a new eMac for under a grand, or an iBook for under two.
My Powerbook, with the SuperDrive, cost me about $1800 and is the best piece of technology I own.

28. Crash times? LOL! Another myth from the Mac horde....
PCs "crash" because of the endless variables of system configuration, user influence, other software etc. I do network administration on a Windows domain that involves public safety/life safety requirements. We do not have "crashes", but then again, we have competent administrators.

Mac is a more stable platform, period. You have high-paid people to fix Windows bugs, more power to ya. Most people don't.

I don't care how much you love your OS or comp. Apples are good for some and not for others. For my needs PC wipes the floor with Apple (inexpensive upgrades, price, software that interests me, etc etc). Its not the end of the world either way, and certainly not worth posting a thread on... nuff said.

9. If OSX was as popular as Microsoft.
Edited on Mon Aug-16-04 10:01 PM by Liberal_Guerilla
Then it would be OSX who would be exploited for it's vulnerabilities. But since Apple decided to be totalitarian in it's competetive practices, It has pretty well screwed its self out of competition.

I like having choices, unfortunately, Apple offers few. Apple owners are like religious freaks. If they really felt comfortable with their OS then they wouldn't need to shove it down everyone's throat.

than a Jeep Cherokee because it's not at the top of the most stolen list. If more people drove Ferraris, more would be stolen. If Mac people actually had their wish, and more people used them, you would see the security vulnerabilities.

For the record, my (main) XP box is up 24/7. Never had a virus, no bluescreens.

Ok? Windows XP is a very stable operating system for home users and those that bash it obviously don't use it or are still hung up on the instability of Windows 3.x/95/98/ME.

15. I actually use both :P
I just prefer Mac....sorry i started a war.

I agree if OS X was 95 + % of the market it would be exploited more.

I have used Windows 3.11, 95, 98, 98SE

Yes NT 4.0, 2000 and XP are much better than the DOS days.

Thats part of Mac's charm is that is small.

NO fun driving around in the same generic car.

16. We have a 50/50 mac/PC ratio at work (printer)
about 40 of each. Admin is on PC, production on Macs. Macs are not without problems, but the virus ratio was 100 to 0 (none on the macs, zillions on PC's. Scanning has helped, but some still sneak through. At home it's mac all the way if for nothing other than to avoid virises.

24. At my workplace, Linux is where old computers go to die
When I upgrade a machine at work to new hardware, I re-use the old hardware for something else. For example, the old mail server G3 goes into the employee's lounge, etc...

When something gets too old to run anything else satisfactorily, I put Linux on it, and it goes back to work doing some small portion of our network services, like running a DHCP server or hosting the CVS repository, etc... And on it goes until all the blue smoke finally escapes and it stops working.

FreeBSD has everything Linux has, but has a longer history, a more stable developer community, and is damn near IMPOSSIBLE to lock up.

I like to play with Linux, but when it comes to getting work done, I'll take FreeBSD.
