My skin hurts, but I have no rash..
This is a weird one, the skin right above one of my knees feels like it's sunburned, but there is no visible rash. My skin looks completely normal and the pain is definitely just on the surface. It doesn't hurt if I push on it. I did a quick google and the only diagnosis that comes close is Shingles, which apparently is a form of chicken pox under the skin. Does anyone else have any ideas what it could be?

3. Shingles as far as I know normally develops around the waist
or under the scalp which is where I had it. Also Shingles is extremely painful. It sounds like you have an insect bite. But that is just a lay person's guess.

10. I guess that tells me it's not shingles
because it's just an annoying minor pain, not severe. Getting old sucks.

12. Shingles can develop anywhere
My father just got over a very bad case that appeared on his forearm. It is a reactivation of the varicella zoster virus that causes chickenpox. If you have had chickenpox, the possibility exists of you getting shingles.

What is Shingles?
Shingles is an infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the virus that causes chickenpox. Shingles occurs in people who have had chickenpox and represents a reactivation of the dormant varicella-zoster virus. The disease generally affects the elderly, although it occasionally occurs in younger and/or immunodeficient individuals. The first sign is usually a tingling feeling, itchiness, or stabbing pain on the skin.

6. I've never heard of anyone having shingles on their knee, if

that's any consolation. (Believe me, you don't want shingles because it's very painful and the pain lasts for months, according to those who've had it.)

However, if it's possible to have shingles on the knee, see a doctor ASAP since early treatment makes a big difference in treating it, can prevent months of extreme pain. Did the reference you found say you can get shingles on the knees or legs in general?

Good luck with it -- mysterious aches and pains are such a nuisance!

11. Irritant dermatitis?
I get that when my clothing isn't completely rinsed of detergent. Some people get it from things like latex. Typically, it feels as though a large area is chafed, but the irritation is actually all in one teeny-tiny little bump.

Has your knee been rubbing against anything in the last few days?
