1. gotta go with Dr. Zhivago
IMO his best work. I think slightly better character development than Lawrence of Arabia.

2. There is no reason not to pick Kwai.
There is so much truth packed into those 2 hours that it induces a wonderful kind of pain.

3. I agree totally about "Bridge Over the River Kwai"
Edited on Sun Aug-15-04 10:04 PM by greatauntoftriplets
It came out the summer that I was 8. Made my mother take me to see it 3 times.

The end of that movie, where the doctor stands and looks over all the carnage (virtually everybody has died) and says in that incredulous voice, shaking his head: "Madness. MADNESS" so captures my reaction to war.

5. Kwai is more viscerally entertaining, Lawrence is more intense & shocking
Lawrence for cinematography. Kwai for great storyline and well-developed characters.

8. Dr Zhivago
a little bit of thread hijacking here - last month, we went on our family vacation - camping. Our rule is everyone must read one book, so I picked Dr Zhivago. I really enjoyed the book, it was beautiful, and I have to say the movie captured it perfectly. for those that have not read it, do so,

I did find it interesting (and I am going from memory here, so forgive me if I don't get it exactly right), The book talks alot about a sort of "national mental illness", as the author put it. Where you don't agree with an idea but you are forbidden to talk about it, or discuss any alternatives other than the one forced upon you, until you find yourself believing in what you did not believe in before. Sound familiar? Hate radio anyone?
