What is the SCARIEST thing you heard someone say?
Not the national creeps that want you to think about fear all the time.

On a personal level.

Scariest words?

62. That is really bizarre! I had no idea...
When my Dad died, and after the wake, they returned his jewelry, his wedding ring and a diamond that he had always worn on his right hand. It seemed so strange to see this, sans Dad, since he had never removed his rings in my lifetime. A couple of days after the funeral I was suddenly struck by a thought that made me suddenly sit up in bed. He was still wearing his St. Christopher's medal. They must not have noticed this. My father traveled all over the world and averted some near-miss situations. I thought of this and thought that it was a good thing that he had kept this. I hoped that it would continue to keep him safe on his final journey.;(

8. I used to work with this Cuban-American
He was so much fun and we laughed our heads off while we worked.
We did good work together, too. Produced lots of interesting, creative things.

Remember when Ari Fleischer said we'd better watch what we say? Well, I brought this up and expressed horror. My co-worker said, "You can't just let people say whatever they want!! That could lead to trouble!!"

I thought he was kidding but he wasn't. He absolutely meant it.

"You can't just let people say whatever they want!! That could lead to trouble!!"

I couldn't agree more. Let's see what he thinks when the government starts to use the FBI to infiltrate anti-abortion groups, subjects the Christian Coalition to IRS audits and begins tapping the phones and computers of the Heritage Foundation.

Your Cuban co-worker will recognize that kind of stuff from the old country.

9. "That deficits are good for starving out the Democrats base..."
I was talking to a Conservative "Christian" once at college and he explained that creating huge deficits was a GOOD thing because it means the government then is FORCED to reduce spending on social programs...which ultimately hurts the Democratic Base!!! He then went on to describe that greed was good and it is a survival of the fittest world in America! AMAZING coming from the same guy who a few weeks later would denounce Darwin and present a totally theocratic view of our government in class! Compassionate conservatism in action!!!

I believe his attitude and comments, although very scary, are typical of your average Right-Wingnut...

I did manage to argue back quite effectively. I said that the ONLY reason why conservatives emphasize military spending over social spending is that they ALREADY HAVE THE WEALTH...all they want is for us poor kids to go out and help protect that wealth for them..and in the case of Iraq, EXPAND that wealth! I also quoted a few passages from the Bible and mentioned that socialism is a CHRISTIAN CONCEPT! My proof? Right here!

"All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need." (Acts 2:44-45).

"All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had… There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need." (Acts 4:32,34,35)

Shortly thereafter he simply quit arguing and walked away...

But his disregard for humanity still spooks me to this day.

43. My family, too. In fact, most of them,
but it's my mother who is the rabid one. It's not just that she won't listen, but just starts yelling so loudly that she couldn't hear me, even if she wanted to. There's no way to reach a closed mind. She has even gone so far as to say that my late father would be "ashamed" of me. It is so easy now for her to put words in his mouth. My father may have been a Republican, but he was neither stupid, nor insane. I know that we could have discussed this amicably. My grandmother, his mother, who even voted against FDR, came around. She called me and told me that she voted for Bill Clinton. I told her that I had, as well, but there was no need to tell the others, LOL!:D

Someone told me that when I was a freshman in high school and he overheard a religious discussion between me and one of my Christian friends. I guess he figured out I was Jewish, so he asked me, and my friend told him "it's none of your buisness". That ass replied with "Well, if you *are* Jewish, you should die!", and that was the end of the exchange.

I was pretty freaked out, but I never saw that guy again.

Someone else gave me the Nazi salute one time too (he thought it was funny). He's in the Air Force Academy now.

44. I also lose it when people say this
But it's not unexpected. Bush* made a very clear connection between these two events, every chance he got, in his march to war. He just began, in one of his rare press conferences, to refer to 9/11 and Iraq in the same sentence. He got away with it, thanks to our unquestioning "liberal" media, so he actually began linking the two. And many Americans still believe this. This scares me, as well.

Edited on Sun Aug-15-04 03:15 AM by oxymoron
My best friend and I were in a McDonald's in Portland, OR in the late '70's. Two masked gunmen entered both side doors, and forced all of the patrons (about 12 of us) into the cooler. We were in there for about 20 minutes. They then pulled us out of the cooler, opened the outside back door, and forced me to stand in in the doorway with a gun to my head. They yelled the above line to the cops, that were crouching, guns drawn, outside the back door. One of the gunmen said that he "didn't want to kill anybody" and they eventually gave themselves up without a shot fired. We later learned that they were 18-20 years old and were eventually sentenced to about 10 years in prison.

My friend was a truly brilliant woman, who is now an agoraphobic. I have always wondered if this incident had anything to do with her illness.

60. Here is one thing I read that "freaked me out" or something about how the
U.S is "a terrorist attack away from martial law," or at least " a terrorist attack INVOLVING WMD'S away from martial law."

64. A few student papers have been frightening
I read a paper recently in which a student said the torture at Abu Ghraib was justified because the torturers MIGHT have gotten some information that saved Americans.

A few others have compared gays to serial killers.

I teach in the South, needless to say.

72. Student papers, eh?
I got one as a TA four years ago that said, "blacks are for Gore because he's for more welfare."

"My period is a little late . . ."

But that wasn't in a student paper.

68. Brace yourselves. This is going to be heavy. Think twice before reading.

Two guys sitting on a park bench, chatting. I was sitting on the same bench, looking after Gabriela who was playing in the seesaw, swing etc. By their uniforms they were probably drugstore clerks . It was around lunchtime. One of them was talking about an acquaintance of his who was a policeman. He went on like this:

"He says criminals are like lace -- you gotta kill them whilke they're still larvae".

He then went into specifics, like the time the cop open the car trunk to proudly show two gagged and cuffed kids inside, how he and his cohorts like to beat them up silly before shooting, how sometimes he loses pitbulls on them just for fun.

The guy hearing pointed to some 8-9yo kids playing in the park, asking "about that age?" and the other said, "yup". The scariest thing was the lack of indignation of their part.

I left the place shaking. Gabriela asked, "Daddy, are you cold? It isn't cold."

69. "Are you comfortable with the orange juice?"
Asked by a very sweet and solicitous Indian waiter who also wanted to know if I was comfortable with the chicken (this was back during the bird flu scare).

I think the only thing I ate in the restaurant was bread. He got a big tip though.

70. While I was testifying as an eyewitness to an attempted murder
by the husband against the wife with a shotgun, the brother of the accused, sitting behind the accused, mouthed the words as he stared at me, "I am going to fucking kill you!"

After his brother was found guilty and got 20+ years in Angola tha day, I went out and bought my first handgun and started sleeping with a 44 magnum.

71. "If there's a draft, YOU'LL SERVE"
Um, no I won't. But I was threatened by some manly, military type about a year ago when I commented on the draft.
