7. I LOVE Tucson--just about the perfect desert city.
Wow; up north here in Phoenix we are still desperately hoping for storms.

Are you visiting there? It's really a lovely town.

9. My storm story from Tucson
I was at FlightSafety (at the Tucson airport) for Learjet 35 training in the late 70s. I was in the simulator doing a single-engine ILS to minimum vis conditions. Then there was a loud clap of thunder. I thought the instructor had introduced another element into the problem. As an ex-FSI instructor myself, I thought that strange. Within a few seconds, however, the simulator "crashed." Everything went black and the motion base gave a death throw or two. I though I had fucked up the approach, B-A-D!

Sergio, my instructor, said, "Get out quick! The building has been hit by lightning!" I did.

We walked to the front lobby and watched the storm. The nearby arroyo quickly flooded. Lightning hit all around. Sergio then said, "We might should go to the back of the building."

"Why?," said I.

"Because," said Sergio, "That building across the street is a dynamite factory."

11. My second storm story from Tucson.
I was on a long final approach on an ILS to Tucson in a Boeing 737-400. Lightning was flashing everywhere. We had the radar on, and it showed nothing. Radar reflects rain. The lightning was being produced by desert "dry" cells. We were getting the shit kicked out of us in the turbulence. Then my hair started standing up on my head. I knew what was next. P-O-W! Lightning strike. I could hear the 148 passengers in the back screaming.

Everything seemed OK, and we broke-out at about 2000 feet above the ground with great visibility but with high, gusty winds. When we touched down the auto-spoilers failed to deploy. No sweat. Pull handle, deploy manually. At the gate the mechanics discovered a half-dollar sized hole burned into the leading edge of the starboard wing.

14. Cute Aviation Story For You...

I love pilots! Here's one from the 1960's for you.

Back when flight attendants were stewardesses and there was NO airport security to speak of (or neccessary!) a school chum of mine had a guide dog. Her brother was an airline pilot. Since at that time, family of the airline employees could freely "deadhead" on the line's aircraft wherever they wanted to go, she was planning on traveling home from college on the flight her brother was running.

The pilot was graced with a WICKED sense of humor. He hatched the scheme with his sister and it went like this: When they were readying the plane, she went in, inconspicuously on the arm of a stew. Just before boarding instructions went out over the PA, the brother, in full uniform, strode confidently across the waiting area, hand on Willow's harness, the dog guiding him expertly into the boarding tunnel!

The poor gate agent was MOBBED with passengers trying to get their tickets changed! The pilot had to come back out and prove to the horrified passengers he was NOT blind!

*snicker*

Man, you couldn't do that *today*!
