Blind man drives 154 kph -caught in Speed Trap

Barcelona - When a Spanish insurance company discovered the man they had paid a €500 000 compensation for loss of sight had been caught in a speed trap at 154 kilometres an hour, it cried fraud.

But a Barcelona court found that Domingo Merino, 55, truly was blind and threw out the fraud claim in a ruling reported yesterday by many of the country's newspapers.

In 1996, Merino was attested to be blind in both eyes after an accident. Two years later, he was clocked and photographed driving a vehicle at 154 kilometres an hour.

Nonetheless the judge pronounced Merino legally blind - and warned him never to drive a car again.
