Does anyone else have cats with this odd behavior?
Every morning before I go to work I clean out the litter box. And every morning at least one cat is waiting there for me to clean out the damn litter box so they can be the first to use a fresh box

It's like they rush in there to watch me clean out the box so then they can be the first cat to use the fresh box. This morning Evita looked like she had an urgent need for the litter box so I stopped cleaning and did something else so she could do her business. I came back 5 minutes later and she was still in the litter box room waiting for me to finish cleaning the damn box so she could use it

Damn furballs - why do we humans put up with this

4. Actually, he doesn't do that anymore
actually he never crapped outside the box and he hasn't piddle outside the box in about 2 weeks. But I'll catch him from time to time sitting near his old piddling grounds (now covered with alumninum foil).

16. Whimpy? WHIMPY?
Lynne, it takes so much strength to be a cat lover! Honestly, honey, you're no one until you've been tolerated by a cat. It takes a great deal of character to live with critters that merely tolerate you in exchange for your TLC. :)

5. My cat does that.
I'm barely done pouring in the new litter and he's already pissing. Doesn't even wait for me to put the top back on his box.

7. All my litter box cats have always done that
But Pad Thai is the worst. He can't stand for the litter box to be clean. It must smell like his piss. I have two litter boxes and he will follow me from one to the other to mark after I have cleaned up. Just for fun I've thought of getting like ten litter boxes and clean them all at the same time. Let's see if he has enough piss for that!

11. Three cats, four litter boxes, and Pooky waits...
until I have cleaned all four of them. Then he poops in one, and pees in one of the others, just to make sure that his territory is well defined. He is the one who sits and watches me while I am doing it and frequently uses one while I am cleaning the next. The otehr two are quite content to use them at will.

12. Yup
Used to have a big ol' orange-and-white tabby named Tater Tot whose sole purpose in life was to "break in" a fresh litter box.

We had 4 cats at the time and two litter boxes, and I kid you not, he was there to piddle in EACH ONE when I changed them.

14. Oh, hell, yes. It's common, especially in homes w/ more than one cat.
They have to make their mark.

Our Cocoa goes a step further, though: She stands on the rim and dances around. Whenever we change the box completely, she jumps in and plays in the clean litter as if it were her own private beach. Silly girl.

17. One of ours was a 'street rescue'
who had been kipping under my mother's backyard shed. For the first several weeks she lived with us, she liked to sleep in the litter box. We use a really fine-grained litter that's a lot like the consistency of sand. I think because she'd been sleeping on packed dirt under my mother's shed, it made her feel secure.

Now, of course, she'll kip just about anywhere except the sofa, which is leather. The cats don't like to sleep on it unless there's a blanket on it. They'll walk on it, but only our alpha cat sleeps on it -- it's one of the highest spots in the room that's remotely comfortable, I think that's why she puts up with it even though she prefers the carpet-covered cat furniture most of the time. She's our 'alpha' and she's the one who waits until the boxes have been scooped and pees in them all immediately. I definitely think it's a territorial thing, I think those who have said that are right.

18. Yes, but there is a way to fix that behavior
My partner told me that our cat Freddie was always first to use the box after it was cleaned. My partner and I have been together now over 6 years and Freddie doesn't do that anymore. That's because I clean the box twice a day at about the same times every day. We also have 3 litter boxes now - 2 for each cat.

25. Don't you love the "new math"
We also have 3 litter boxes now - 2 for each cat

Since there's no longer any need for the number "one" (there never was), things work out a lot better.

In old school arithemtic we'd have a problem.

19. Yes that behaviou seems to be widespread among cats - it is if they think
they are doing us a favor by not going on the carpet. "All I ask is a clean litter box to go in. Is that too much to ask? Well, is it?" As you can see, I know the feline mind well.

He has to make sure that just enough fresh litter is displaced before he can use the box. :eyes:

24. Yes

I'll clean my box out and go sit down and I hear one of my cats scratching in the box.

These are clean animals folks...leave turds in their box and they'll find a way around it.
