2. Shut them down
Our defensive backs will shut them down. Chris Gamble and Dustin Fox at corner will shut them down. Along with Will Smith at safety will shut the Huskie Offense Down.

got 94 receptions last year and is expected to do better this year. I am glad AZ St. doesn't have to play Washington this year.

8. If that's all they have, it won't be enough.
Without a running game, ten or fifteen catches by one receiver, while unlikely, still won't score enough to beat the Buckeyes. In fact, without a running game, I don't think the passing game will do that well in the 'Shoe.

Didn't Washington State have some kind of passing threat with a Heisman hopeful QB last year? Well, he was a Heisman hopeful until the Buckeye game. And the Ohio State defense returns nine starters. The replacements are experienced and very good, too.

11. You can without a running game
but they will do a decent job, Washington had a ok season last year and they will be trying to prove something this year. Look what happened last night, NIU beat Maryland 20-13 and was shut out in the running game and Maryland does have a great D. But it is going to be a great game and could go either way, just don't blow of Washington because they have a great chance of downing the Bucknuts(Sorry still pissed off at them for the 1997 Rose Bowl)

14. Re: 1997 Rose Bowl.
That was a helluva game. It would still have been a helluva game if it had ended differently. I can see why you would be pissed at that. I'm sure you were opening up the victory champaign (not literally, what were you, 12?) when Plummer scored that last touchdown.

And if I have you confused with some younger DU'er, I'm not trying to be a smartass. I just seem to remember reading that you're still rather young.

Now, as for Northern Illinois' lack of a running game, they ran right down Maryland's throat on the final scoring drive in regulation. And they had a back with 90 yards. That's not a lack of a running game. Washington averaged 74 or something like that as a team last year. That won't cut it tomorrow night. If they can't do better than that, they are toast. And they may very well be able to run the ball this year. It's a different year, after all. But if they can't run, they can't win against OSU.

17. About the last paragraph
Edited on Fri Aug-29-03 06:35 PM by VermontDem2004
I watched the NIU v Maryland Game and they won the game mostly of their passing game, driving down the field with their RB did get them tieing field goal though. But Michael Turner had 30 carries which translates to 3.0 YPC, that is not much for college football. Washington runs about 18-25 times a game, but they have a helluva passing game. I don't like Washington or O State but I still think WA has a great chance to win. I was 11 during the Rose Bowl game, but I always loved College Football and get excited about it every year.

21. Oh, I'm not saying they don't have a chance.
Edited on Fri Aug-29-03 06:41 PM by Ohio Dem
I'm just saying that balance is necessary against a quality defense.

Well, that's why they play them. You and I won't be able to determine the winner just by talking about it on a liberal website. Unfortunately, because I can really get carried away talking about my Buckeyes, and AWD gets with it as well. If talking about it here was all that was required, OSU would never lose a game. :)

On edit: It looks like Sasquatch isn't going to mind talking a little Buckeye football, either. Yep, they'd never lose a game if it was up to us, I say.

36. What do you mean you don't need a running game
even when passing teams play they need the running game to win. When FSU and Florida play the team with the most running yards 9 times out of 10 wins the damned game.

12. Not worried about NC State?
Somehow, I'm not either. They might win the ACC, but that might not be much of an accomplishment this year. FSU is still sorta down and Maryland just got beaten by a MAC team.

That being said, all the games worry me a little. How many times does a team like, oh, say, Iowa win every game but lose to a team that did't worry them (Iowa State)? I remember one year that Northwestern went undefeated except for one game, Miami of Ohio. So anything can happen.

I worry about them all, but only one at a time, so this week, I'm worrying about Washington. I'm not losing any sleep, mind you.

23. I'm not worried either about NC State
The ACC is overrated like always. The reason FSU plays there is because it is a basketball confrence so they have no competetion. Now that there is some decent competition in that league they'll fold like a towel. I don't think Miami will stay in that conference for long when they turn it in too a football confrence, I see them running back crying to the Big East.

5. Should be a good game.
No blowouts here. But Washington only gets 75 yards or so on the ground per game, and that's not going to cut it against the Buckeye Defense. If a team has no running game, OSU won't give them a passing game. If they don't have to worry about the running game, it's all blitz and zone coverage. Gotta have balance.

Hey Buckeye fans, O!!!!! H!!!!

Yeah, I know what you mean. When two teams you despise play each other, you can't root for a tie anymore. I know exactly what you mean.

But a Washington nonconference loss doesn't do anything to help ASU in the Pac-10 race. Unless the Pac-10 season ends up with Washington and ASU in a tie (there's that damn tie again), and overall record is the tie-breaker between the two teams.

24. That is correct.
Starting either in the third or fourth OT, a team that scores a touchdown is required to go for two. The theory is that the game will end more quickly because of the "have to go for two" rule, extra points being nearly a sure thing.

I'll see if I can find more info.

ex. USC v UCLA.

UCLA wins coin tosses chooses to defend first

USC scores a field goal 3-0

UCLA scores a field goal 3-3

Second Overtime, UCLA gets the ball first

UCLA scores a touchdown 9-3(PAT good 10-3)

USC scores a touchdown 9-10(PAT good 10-10)

Third Overtime, USC gets the ball first but most go for 2

USC scores a touchdown 16-10(PAT no good 16-10)

UCLA scores a touchdown 16-16(PAT no good 16-16)

I am not sure how 4th overtime is, I assume that UCLA gets the ball first.

We need to keep in mind that the Bucks are the team to beat this year and no one is going to come to the Shoe unprepared. This year will really prove if we finally have a big league coach. Personally, I'm convinced.

My uncle was there, though. He and a buddy built some sort of structure over themselves to keep the bulk of the snow off while they were in their seats. I don't know what they used - newspapers or something. I've been told their picture made it into the Dispatch the next day, but I've never seen it and don't know whether that is true or not.

You know it's snowing when the teams punt on 1st down to avoid a really costly turnover and loss of field position.

Edited for typo.

31. A neutral take on this game.
I'm a UCLA guy and I do like the Pac-10, but I think Ohio State wins this one. Washington has to prove it can run and stop the run. If this game were on turf, I think the Huskies would be right there. I think it will be high scoring, but Ohio State wins 38-28. I'll be in Vegas tomorrow, but not betting this one.

To the Buckeye fans not worried about NC State: do so at your own peril. North Carolina State is a complete team, can beat you in the air and on the ground. They play very well on the road, and they also tend to play to the level of their competition. Also, they are extremely well-coached by Chuck Amato. If I'm an OSU fan, I'm more worried about that game.

40. What does that have to do with anything?
Do you follow any college football outside the Big 10?

NC State is probably a top ten team this year with a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate and a sleeper pick to get to the Sugar Bowl.

I'm not picking them to win that game here and now, but to call them suspect because the play in the ACC is simply preposterous.

Conference stregnth is judged primarily by DEPTH, and the ACC has it in spades. Florida State, Maryland, NC State, Virginia could all wind up in the final top 15. Clemson is solid and could be Georgia tomorrow. Wake Forest will be tough again.

Do your homework.

Maryland just lost to Northern Illinois(jesus guys was Massilon High School busy). Florida State is so bad now it isn't funny, the only reason they win is because they have a weak schedule. Virginia doesn't have crap, they didn't have it last year and they won't have it this year. Clemson uhhh maybe but, I don't think they can beat South Carolina. Wake Forest is a basketball school like all the others. Hell North Carolina could win the ACC.

If you want to watch solid football confrences you watch

Big 10, Big 12, SEC and Pac 10

Not the ACC, sorry:(

Maryland lost to Northern Illinois- Yeah, it's called an upset. Shall I recount the Big Ten teams that have lost to MAC schools over the last few years? Because I can. NIU is also the conference favorite.

Florida State- Weak schedule???? That is downright hysterical!! This team plays Miami and Florida EVERY SINGLE YEAR. Not to mention Notre Dame and Colorado this year as well. Utterly stupid comment.

Virginia- 9-5 last year, destroyed a ranked West Virginia team in a bowl game, and they get basically every one back.

Clemson- plays South Carolina in November. they play Georgia tomorrow. Get it straight.

Wake Forest- Basketball school that shredded Oregon out of the Pac-10 in their bowl game. Also beat Purdue last year.

North Carolina can win the ACC? I haven't seen a publication with UNC higher than sixth. They're on a major downswing. This proves beyond a doubt you know not what you speak of.

Do you have any more nuggets of college football wisdom you would like me to disprove with fact?

EDIT: Forgot to dispel the UNC winning the ACC notion.

52. Yes I do
Maryland still lost to a damned MAC team. Over the years Florida State has had a cake walk schedule, until last year. Florida wasn't very good last year, so I don't count them as a good team. The reason they went 9-5 was because they had a tuff schedule for once and they were held to the fire about being a decent team. If Florida State was playing their past schedules they would have went 11-3. Virginia for some reason I don't feel easy about them being in the column of a good team. I KNOW Clemson plays Georgia tommorrow I'm saying that they couldn't beat their in state rival South Carolia and Georgia for that matter as well. As for Wake Forest, the sun occasionaly shines on a dog's ass so; they have to eventually win one in a great while.

I still say if you want to see good College football watch these confrences.

Big 10, Big 12, SEC and Pac 10

55. Historically, yes. Right now, this season, no.
1. Big XII. 2. Big Ten. 3. SEC 4. ACC 5. Pac-10 6. Big East

Florida State- go back through their schedules, they play a loaded non-conference slate every single year. This is not recent. Actually, there isn't a program that plays a better year in, year out, non-conference schedule than the Seminoles. Maybe Fresno State. They're overall stregnth of schedule was weaker in past years because the ACC wasn't as strong. Now, that conference is a player.

Clemson has struggled with South Carolina, but so have some other teams in the last few years, including one school who happens to have an 0-2 record against South Carolina in recent Outback Bowls.

Yeah, Wake has sprung up recently. But what conference doesn't have a program that springs up once in a while? (Northwestern in the Big 10, Iowa St in the Big XII) Wake will probably take a step back this year, as they were hit hard by graduation.

Upsets happen. Maryland lost to a MAC team that is very good and the game was in OT on the road. Should they have won? Yes. But if you watch college football, this happens all the time. Maryland will wind up no worse than 8-4 this year, probably 9-3, even if they do lose to FSU next week.

Bottom line is this, to discount NC State because their in the ACC is just incorrect. By the same logic, you would be more worried if Ohio State was playing Baylor, because the Bears are in the Big XII. Ask a Notre Dame fan who saw last year's Gator Bowl what they think of NC State.

57. I like that website.
I'm not going to jump into this little thing you and Sasquatch have going. I already posted what I think, anyway.

But that website's not bad - good, even. If you want raw data to go along with the opinions (that's what most sports writing is - especially before the season even starts) that are all over the place, you might want to check out www.collegebcs.com . Good stuff. And if you subscribe ($15 per year for football only or $25 for football and hoops), you get some pretty interesting prospective, too. I think the guy that runs it is one of the original computer rankings guys. But even without the subscription, I think you can access every D-1 team and what they've done, record-wise, over the years. A bowl history is starting to emerge there, too. It's a good place for a lot of data all in one place.

Since you seem like a fan that likes to have the facts, and have them accessible (i.e. in one place), you might want to check it out.

For obvious reasons. OSU plays them tomorrow. I'll do my share of worrying about NC State soon enough. But I have a better feeling about the NC State game than I do the Washington game. I don't know why. Call it a gut feeling or something.

It really doesn't matter who I worry about, anyway. As long as the coaches and players take every game seriously, it doesn't matter what the fans think. So if Sasquatch doesn't want to worry, that doesn't bother me in the least. If Tressel doesn't want to worry, then I'm concerned.

38. OK - some Buckeye love from an alum

GO BUCKS!!!!!

(any alum out there remember Stadium Dorm??)

Not that I'm old or anything, but I (and friends) were paid $25 each to spent 6 hours sitting in folding chairs at the 50 yd. line to make sure the (newly installed!!!) Astroturf wouldn't be damaged by holding commencement in the 'Shoe.

Oh, BTW, it's a beautiful evening here, the air is heavy with the smell of fresh rain, the dogs are playing in the wet grass, and Michigan still sucks.

46. I remember the Stadium Dorm, but never lived there.
I had a friend who did, though. I didn't care for it. No windows to speak of. It was a scholarship dorm when I was at OSU, but the residents had to work for the University in some capacity.

Oh, by the way, it's currently 10:49 PM by my watch. And Michigan still sucks.

66. Stadium Dorm redux
Lived there from 71-early '73 - yes, it was a scholarship dorm. All male - during Winter Quarter winter there would be a sign right inside the front door that said "It's winter, boys - don't be fooled by a pretty face." That always went over well with female guests. :)

In return for reduced rates for room and board the "residents' worked "x' number of hours per week doing various chores around the place - kitchen, cleaning public areas, etc. i was lucky - only a handful of rooms had windows, and mine was one of 'em.

We literally lived right above the stadium surface - down two flights of stairs and we were on the 'Turf. Always got a lot a "favors" for sneaking people in (especially during the Michigan game).

The dorm, I think, closed for good prior to the stadium renovations.

We'lll be in Columbus for the San Diego State game - haven't seen the newly renovated 'Shoe yet.

Oh, BTW, it's 9:54 a.m. EST, and Michigan still sucks.

49. Did they close the stadium dorms?
Do regular students live there or just players?

51. I don't think the players ever stayed there.
It was for scholarship students that worked for the University when I was at Ohio State. Most of the football players lived in the dorms in South Campus, I believe.

And yes, I think they closed the Stadium Dorm when they did all that work to the stadium.

62. Those south campus dorms
are such a maze compared to the ones on north campus, where I lived. They're laid out funny, but if you live there or visit there regularly, it's not so bad. I'm basing this observation on Smith. Steeb might be different.

And the Towers aren't that bad anymore, what with two students per room now. When I was in school, they were the only ones that had cable, but I suspect that has changed.

65. Smith, Steeb, Park and Stradley were laid out the same.
I think they each had 11 stories. Patterson and Baker however, were the dorms that were most maze like and easiest to get lost in. :)

I liked living on south campus.

I hope the Huskies get the fur whipped from 'em. Donate the fur to the New-weasel -- he'll need a new coat now that he's unemployed...

60. Good luck tomorrow.
I think you're the first actual Washington fan in this thread. There have been Pac-10 fans and OSU haters, but you're the first actual Washington fan.

Here's to no injuries on either side. Here's to a well-played game on both sides.

Good luck tomorrow.
