Poll question: Do you own a cellphone
One you own and use for personal stuff, not one that you might use at work.

16. Yes
But it stays in my car almost all the time. My main reason for having it is for emergencies like if I get stuck on the road or something. And if I do have to use it and I am driving, I pull over and stop somewhere. I never use it while driving.

2. Yes.. but I feel towards cell phones like I do towards all phones...
convenient and necessary "evil," that should be used selectively. I'm not one that will ever be "addicted" to talking on ANY phone. Some days I'd prefer not to have any...

5. Never leave home without it..... though
Edited on Sun Jul-11-04 11:57 AM by Misunderestimator
I DO turn it off when it's inappropriate for it to ring... Like the freaking movie theater, where some woman behind me last night answered THREE calls during the movie. I turned around and stared at her, and said "Are you kidding?" Didn't shut her up, but I got thumbs up from the ones around her.

18. Don't Most Theaters Have a Policy About That?
I would have talked to the manager or an usher and had her removed from the theater. Her behavior was downright rude and ignorant. For years now, every time I go to the movies, after the previews they put up an announcement telling you to turn off your cell, no smoking, etc. If someone can't follow theater policy, then they should just wait for a movie to come out on Video/DVD and see it then.

I didn't want to miss anything.... And I didn't want to bother everyone else stepping over them to get out. I should have though.

6. I have a TracFone
It's pay as you go. I hardly ever use it but like the security it provides while cycling, on car trips or in the city. To pay a monthly service fee for how little I use it would be ridiculous.

I just need to buy some minutes every few months to keep my number. It works out to about $10 a month.

I guess it depends on how you use your cell, but this works for me.

I know there's a growing trend of getting rid of your land line at home and just going with the cell.

I guess you just have to look at your usage patterns to determine what is most economical for you.

9. Absolutely not....
I refuse to have one for work. I am in the office, on the average, 10 to 12 hours a day. If someone can't get a hold of me for work purposes during the day, it can wait. If it's a dire emergency, the appropriate people have my number and can reach me at home.

Likewise, I have an answering machine and if I'm not home to take personal calls from friends, family, etc...I will call them back when I am home.

When I am travelling I have a pre-paid phone card.

I have no desire to be in constant touch with the rest of the world during my own time. I refuse to own one.

15. I have to have a cell phone for work...
Unfortunately, I'm pretty much on-call all the time, though I'm not often called unless there's a real problem. The company paid for my cell for years, then suddenly they decided that cell phone usage would be a GREAT place to try to save some pennies (idiots), so they decided to charge employees with company phones for any person usage. I tried carrying around two phones for a while, but that was a nuisance, so I just got myself a much better plan on my own and a MUCH better service (go Verizon, by the way). Still use it for work, but at least they can't be big brothering me about it.

11. one for business
that i pay for, i'm a realtor so i pay for pretty much everything work related. One for personal use that i hardly ever use. Also i never use either cell while driving and those hands free kits to use in the car are bunk, your brain can't do both tasks at the same time no matter how people will argue it. Hang up and drive.

Since I'm not working till Shrub is de-selected, I spend most of my time at home on the computer. Perhaps I'll get another one then but don't have a need to be instantly in touch with the rest of the world.

13. Mostly for business
I'm in the field a lot and need to reach and be reached by contractors, who are notoriously hard to keep track of. But, it's great for personal use. Never have to look up a phone booth and/or find a working public phone. It's there in emergencies. I've used it more than once to help out other motorists or to report a traffic problem (cows on an on-ramp). Although it doesn't work too well for AAA. When you call the AAA number you may get IA when you are in CA. Still, wouldn't leave home without it. My last two phones have a wonderful, hands-free, headset feature. Phone answers automatically after two rings and hangs up when caller hangs up. I never make call when driving.

14. No. I have no use for one.
Edited on Sun Jul-11-04 12:05 PM by scarlet_owl
I don't have a problem with people who do use them, but I would like to see the day where I can sit in a restaurant and not hear ring tones every five minutes. On edit: what really drives me nuts is when I'm trying to conduct a field trip in the woods and some parent's (or occasionally, teacher's) phone starts ringing. It's distracting to the kids and to me.

20. I finally broke down and got one this winter
The car I was driving was a bit old. I figured it had at least another year in it, but I didn't wish to be stranded. So I got a cell, which came in handy twice before the car finally died a few months ago.

I hardly use mine, as I do have a house phone. But it does come in handy at times. At other times, it's a nuisance, as I can be reached in most places.

21. Unapologetically- since 1986, and primary phone since 1994
The trick (to me) is to keep it in it's place. I don't take it places it shouldn't be...restaurants, theatres, etc; and often simply turn it off when I don't want to be disturbed.

22. No
and even after hiking back two miles on a trail after dislocating my shoulder, I still won't get one. I would never take one on a hike anyway.

It just seems like another tether that would restrict my freedom. If someone needs to talk to me so badly, they can leave a message on my answering machine.

24. HAVE TWO - live in middle of nowhere
no possibility of second line to house (would have to pay for nearly 2 miles of new line -talking about several thousand bucks) - and the dang computer is allways hooked up now, so have one for house replacement/travel and the other is based in nearest big city so Hubby's friends and work clients can call w/out having to dial long distance. Calls between the two are free so it works good for us.

25. I am always shocked to run into someone
who doesn't have one. I'm in college so most people I know only have a cell phone. It is an outstanding all in one tool, scheduler, alarm, and so on. Plus I have tetris on mine so it is a great time killer.

29. I Have Two
One for me, and one for the lovely Mrs. CO Liberal. Calls between our phones are free, which saves us a lot when I'm at work (45 miles away). And long distance is free, so it costs me nothing to call my kids in NJ.

In fact, the only thing we use our land line for is Internet access.
