What is the best highway music?
Highway music as in what is the best music when you are taveling on the open road with your destination hours away and nothing to keep you busy except you mind, your music and the road. My favorite has gotta be Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. I never get tired of their Greatest Hits album when I have to take trips with the ragtop down and the wind in my hair. Makes me feel great to be alive.

Edited on Fri Jul-09-04 05:06 AM by LibertyorDeath
I drove 3000 miles in 52 hours couple of years ago

I had a Carton of smokes

an endless supply of Pepsi & Chocolate (caffeine)

But what got me thru was

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Greatest Hits

I did not take it out of the deck for the entire drive.

YOU CAN STAND ME UP AT THE GATES OF HELL BUT I WONT BACK DOWN !

Cheers

3. You understand what I am talking about
There may be a handful of Tom Petty songs that seem to get old. The rest are classics. His music just "goes" with driving.

She was.... an American Girl!

4. For years, we have started family trips,
with an old UB40 tape, playing loudly. I found another copy and gave it to my college aged daughter last year; it was her favorite Christmas present.

I used to listen to old Dead bootlegs, but my mind wandered too much. LOL.

7. Steve Earle
Especially 'Essential Steve Earle', his early stuff. I love to listen to it while I'm driving. It's got a lot of good road songs, including 6 Days on the Road, Hillbilly Highway, Guitar Town, and
best of all, Copperhead Road.

23. For Southern road trips, Allman Brothers is best
They just came out with a 2-disc anthology that looks great for anyone who doesn't already have most of their CD's. It covers their entire career.

12. Juno Reactor
Its my current fave driving music. Techno/Trance style music. Most likely know them from the 2nd and 3rd Matrix movies or Once Upon A Time in Mexico. A very driving rythm and complex interwoven threads create a perfect blend for twisting roads.

14. My favorite highway song is "Low Desert" by R.E.M.
It's on "New Adventures in Hi-Fi", which is chock-full of songs about travel and being on the road, but "Low Desert" is the best one.

It's about a guy who's driving through the desert and crashes his car, and hallucinates as he dies all alone. It rules!

20. I got a lot of mileage out of Black Sabbath
Some good old Metallica and Megadeth, too. Heavy metal is my favorite, but you got to watch when you listen to that stuff behind the wheel. It can make you more suseptable to road rage.

I'm not kidding. I get to laughing so hard that it keeps me from falling asleep.

Otherwise I listen to Tool, The Grateful Dead, Indigo Girls, or the soundtrack to Jesus Christ Superstar. :)
