Television making me cry
So I'm watching the West Wing re-run where Toby arranges the military honor guard for the homeless Korea vet. And I tear up when the folded flag is handed to the brother.

And I remember the last time TV made me cry, the Columbia funeral, where the flag was handed over from the grateful nation.

And I'd like to know, where do conservatives get off? I'm a conspiracy theorist, leftist, liberal Democrat. And I'm patriotic enough to get choked up like this. I'm moved by the flag.

So I'd like to apologize for any crude language that develops if someone confronts me with the Patriot card.

End of (minor) rant.

1. Whew! I feel better...
I thought I was the only goober whose eyes teared up when I watched that last night! I was glad I was the only one awake in the house while I was watching that.

Why is it I am only moved by the fictional President, and disgusted by the real pResident Whistle Ass? What the F*** is wrong with that picture? This is something that should happen in a Bizzarro world alternate universe.

Where do conservatives get off? They don't. And they don't want you to, either. That is why they are concerned about EVERYBODY's elses sex life...

2. Use this, Robb...

"(Conservatives) love America the way a 4-year-old loves her Mommy. Liberals love America like grown-ups. To a 4-year-old, everything Mommy does is wonderful and anyone who criticizes Mommy is bad. Grown-up love means actually understanding what you love, taking the good with the bad, and helping your loved one grow. Love takes attention and work and is the best thing in the world."

- Al Franken - Lies (and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them): A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right - 2003

That should be easy enough for any RW's to understand.

Also read "Big Lies" for some great responses to RW lies about liberal patriotism (or lack thereof).

3. No. I did too. I posted it as it was happening.
"In Excelsis Deo" is one of my all-time favorite episodes of WW. Liberals love America. What separates us from the conservatives is that we love Americans, too. We're not just out for ourselves.

I participated in several military funerals while I was in the Army. Color Guard, rifle squad, casket detail, that kind of thing. When I teared up is when I imagined the officer presenting the flag to the deceased's brother, saying the traditional words to the bereaved: "On behalf of the President of the United States and the citizens of a grateful nation, please accept this flag as a token of our esteem and respect."

Beautiful moment.

4. That's nothing...
Try watching the last five minutes of the Warren Zevon special on VH1 without tearing up. Seriously. It's the most depressing thing I've ever seen on TV.

(Not to diminish the sadness of a military funeral, you understand...)
