Sometimes I hate what my job requires of me.
I work for an SPCA. When you are investigating dogs and cats you get the opportunity to rescue something, rehabilitate it and place it in a new home. You get photos and letters from the new owners and that's a positive thing.

I am now doing strictly livestock work. You don't get that feedback in livestock work. You get to make the pain stop, but sometimes I get so tired.

Most of the time when I have an angry group of people swearing at me I can just smile to myself, but today was different for some reason.

I had to shoot a cow today. It's something I do on a fairly regular basis. She needed to die, but I miss the positive mental images from when I was doing companion animals, too.

Ho Hum.

2. I don't envy you
but I do appreciate you. I know it's a job that has to be done, but I could not do it.

3. I do have a reply for that
I tell people that I am one of the people who gets to make some of it stop. Don't get me wrong, it's the most satisfying job I've ever had. Some days are just tougher than others.

5. bless you for everything you do...
I know that I could do it if I had to, but I am so glad, and thankful every day, that there are people like you in this world who go out there every single day and help animals, and stop their suffering. You renew my faith in humankind.

What do you do after days like today?

7. A hot shower, a beer,
A Chris Rock special is on later- laughter cures a multitude of evils.

6. Everyday
would be tough for me. I would be in tears all the time after seeing some of the hell these poor pets are put through.

I love all animals. I am even watching a friends snake right now. I couldn't handle seeing some of the things you have to deal with in the course of your job.

4. It could be worse...
I have a friend who is doing research for a law firm defending a pacemaker manufacturer who is facing a class-action suit because of exploding pacemakers.

Her job is to track down the elderly pacemaker recipients and keep track of when they die. Once enough of them are dead that their case will be too weak, the law firm will stop postponing the trial date.

Absolutely no redeeming value in that job at all.

8. I'd feel like I had sold my soul to the devil

I'm unable to do a job I don't believe in. And I do judge people, how does your friend justify that?
Edit stupid spelling

9. I honestly don't know
how anyone can hold a job like that. How does your friend cope with that? Does she rationalize it in any way? What that law firm is doing is pure evil. That isn't defending the company, for if there were actually a defense, they wouldn't have to hold things up until everyone dies. It's protecting a corporation from facing the consequences of a defective product.

10. Her only rationalisation is...
...it's her first job, the market is flooded with newly graduated legal assistants, and she has a 4 year old to support. As soon as she's built up some hang time on her CV, she's going to an ethical firm (if such a thing exists).

13. Like the woman
who became a whistle blower against the insurance companies after she had to deny claims for desperately needed procedures. I can't remember her name, but there was a movie made about her.

12. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to sound judgmental
Although I know that is how it sounded. I think it is the firm that is having her do the research that are the total amoral scumbags. My question was how she handled having to do that. I've been fortunate in that I've never been faced with that. You have to do what you have to do. I do remember a friend of mine who's job it was to call people to inform them that their house was being forclosed on. It wasn't actually she who was taking those homes away, but it definitely left its toll on her, and she eventually had to quit.
