Ive always wondered about the ethics of that.

One is paid to do work, during a set period of time, using equipement provided to do that work.

Yet one uses the equpiment to do non-work related things, while "on the clock".

I'm not paid to do work during a set amount of time, so much as I'm paid to get a set amount of things done by a certain deadline. So long as I do them, my employer doesn't much care how.

Which is why I'm often blogging at 10 a.m., but trying to come up with a decent lead for a story about restroom odor control at 8 pm. at home.

BTW: I'm off today, but not because of the funeral. I had this day scheduled weeks ago (gotta let the a/c tech in, gotta let the city inspector in for the furnace installed last week, then off to the state Dem convention.)

Ive posted this same question on another board, and recieved some pretty irate responses, though. I'm not being judgemental, just curious as it does seem to to be a bit of an ethical issue, even if permissable.

I guess my company understands that many of us put in a lot of our own time, on our own equipment (computer, Internet connection, etc.) doing work for them, that it's OK if it works the other way around, too. (Our IT guy even said as much.) I don't see this as an ethical breach on my end -- it's give and take.

But it does depend -- if your co. says "no outside Internet" or whatever, and you're getting paid to do a task for 8 hours, then you probably should be doing work and not posting here (and you have little or no recourse should you get caught).
