Computer question for DUers....my screen has been flickering...and
waving...(no I don't wave back)...it's nauseating to watch....is my monitor going bad? or is it something else...it doesn't happen when I am not on the net. My monitor is 5 years old.

1. possibly, but check the connections first
the actual wires, including the power supply. So at both ends---were the monitor plugs into your cpu, and vice versa, and the power plug.

2. Is there another electric device nearby?
For example, I cannot have my office fan connected to the same outlet as my monitor, or I get the wavy action you describe. So, it could be interference.

4. nothing that hasn't been in close proximity since I bought the Computer.
I thought of that too....I do have a light that is acting up and they are plugged into the same power surge...I will switch that and see if it works.

7. here's a good way to test if it's interference
wrap the monitor in heavy duty aluminium foil. If it still waves you can rule out interference.

other possibilities:

video card going bad : try it with a different computer
power source is screwy: try at a different house or office (probably not this one)
monitor is just going bad: buy a new one. crts are cheap - super cheap second hand

have you tried deguassing? it'lll be a button or in a menu

what happens when you give the monitor a good open palmed whack on the side?

6. Any Flourescents nearby...

If a CRT monitor is around a Flourescent or inverter (wall wart) it will do things like this.

Another thing to try is increase your refresh rate.

If all else fails, just buy a new one. This is the great thing about technology. When it fails, you can buy a NEWER, NICER one for less than the original cost.

A decent 17" CRT monitor shouldn't cost more than $100.

9. Display Control Panel

-> Settings -> Advanced -> Monitor

I think it's about the same on Windows 9x. You may not be able to increase it.

If the screen goes black, TOUCH NOTHING, just wait. Windows will automatically switch it back to the old refresh rate.
