Proud that I've not been caught up in this onslaught of Harry Potterism.

I saw "Goodbye Lenin" this weekend - great movie, highly recommended!!

1. You *are* missing something
The latest book is a damning indictment of Rovian politics.

3. Me too
but if I ever do get the bug to read the books, I'm going to find the "orginal" versions; the publishers repleaced the British words (lorry, lift, etc) for the US version.

6. I haven't either
I'm not sure that I'd say I'm *proud* about it. I guess I just don't give it very much thought at all.

8. I've read all five Harry Potter books and have seen the first two films.
And I've loved every minute of reading and viewing that I've spent in the Potterverse. When you consider that I don't usually go infor fantasy, that's saying a lot!

P.S. I plan to see the third film some time in the next few weeks, after the initial uproar has died down.

9. Never understood the fascination
I tried to watch the first movie, but grew disinterested after about 5 minutes. Never have attempted to read the books.

10. I felt the same way until I read the first book a few months ago
after that I had to read the next 4 within a couple weeks. Now I want to see the 1st movie again, I think I will appreciate it more. I haven't seen the 2nd or 3rd yet.

11. The stories really are quite good...
One poster lumped them in with Titanic, which you just can't do. Titanic was a big wanker of a film. In fact, you just simply cannot judge Harry Potter by the movies, at least not the first two which were rather bland. From what I understand, Cuaron as director of HP3 makes all the difference, I can't wait to see the third installment!

But, truly, the books are terrific. Rowling is a great writer and I just marvel at the way these books appeal to both children and adults. The books appeal to the deeper, magical core in humans (well, in liberals -- conservatives get too whacked out by anything non-fundie). And besides, I have the most colorful, fantastic dreams when I'm reading the HP books. Usually my dreams are these uptight, worried, money/family/health dreams that rehash all the stress I'm going through right now (Mom with Alzheimer's, new business, no cash) and HP books truly offer a different world to step into.

Try them. You'll be pleasantly surprised, just like Abbie and Evita changed your mind about cats, one or two chapters of a Harry Potter book will change your mind about the phenomenon that is JKRowling.

14. Saw the latest movie yesterday.
It was fantastic. The best of the three! My youngest son has fallen madly in love with Hermonie Granger now.

13. I love Harry Potter

I've read the first four books... waiting for the last one to come out in paperback.

The stories are tightly woven, make sense according to the logic of the world that Rowling created, and have vivid 3-dimentional characters. The best thing is the books don't treat childhood like some sappy, sugary-sweet experience drenched in sepia. Rowling doesn't talk down to kids, which I very much respect.

edita: saw the first two movies and was not that impressed with them. Too much a kind of illustrated book, rather than films in their own right. I'm looking forward to seeing the third movie though.

17. I'm proudly Potter-free, too.
In fact, it's because of Harry Potter that I found myself almost agreeing with a Freeper-type this weekend: he said "I long for the good old days when a kid would have gotten his ass kicked for going to school dressed like that."

I certainly don't advocate violence against kids, but I could almost understand his sentiment.

Go ahead, flame away - I'm the only person in my office not getting Friday off, because I'm the only single person here. You can't lower my mood at all.

18. I thought I was the only one.
Harry Potter-free, too. I told my bf he'll have to go to the new movie alone.

I agree - Goodbye Lenin was a great movie.
