My hint for removing the core from iceberg lettuce
Unwrap the plastic near the core. Smack the flat part of the core with your hand. Remove. I did it in front of my mom who is a great cook and she had never seen it before!

1. Or you can slam the bottom core on the cutting board
My partner taught me this trick awhile ago. It really makes dealing with iceberg easy.

3. That's the way I do it.
It really is impressive looking.

A variation works for opening jars with tight lids - smack the bottom of the jar hard with the palm of your hand. Lid opens easily.

11. You can also tap the bottom of most jars with a spoon
two or three times and most will open like magic!

2. I always slam it on the table
and the core is usually easy to remove. That way I don't hurt my hand by slamming it into the lettuce.

5. Gahhhh
Thanks for reminding me of my restaurant-slave days...

To get the ketchup to flow from a glass bottle of Heinz (without coating your knife), tip the bottle and smack the '57' on the neck with the heel of your hand.

9. Thats where I learned it- at a Friendly's restaurant.
Although I was a galley slave I got lucky quite a few times with several waitresses there. It made up for the minimum wage I was paid.

6. And a good way to get Heinz ketchup out of the bottle.....
Is to hit it at the markings a third of the way down the bottle. It dispels the air and gets the ketchup out. Works every time!

7. or take a knife, insert it as far as it will go into the bottle, and

make a circle around the inside edge. Breaks up the frozen mass of ketchup & makes it pourable.

10. My hint is...
Iceberg lettuce has almost no nutritional value--only fiber. Don't eat it.

The darker lettuce is, the more nutrition it has. Iceberg is more than half white--no nutrition but fiber.

Romaine, "leaf," Boston, Bibb...all have lots of color, all have plenty of nutrition. Eat those lettuces.

I really like raw spinach, but preparing it is a pain because you must wash the sand out of each leaf individually.
