Edited on Sun May-30-04 01:47 AM by countfloyd
before she did it with him!

She actually released an album titled "Cybil Does It to Cole Porter"...I think Bogdanovich produced it...when he was doing it to her!

6. Interesting to note...
that Dylan covers comprise most of the album. Guess they decided "Well, he can't really sing too well, either, so I can't fuck it up TOO badly..."

She sent away for all of 'em, every time a new one came out. I dreaded the arrival of the mailman.

Egad, what a blast from my past.

13. I saw the E! "True Hollywood" story on her, and...believe it or not...
...she had a pretty large audience that held her in high regard. Of course, it's easy to have a musical career when Sugar Daddy keeps the platinum card close at hand.

16. George Harrison hated working with her and Sean Penn on...
"Shanghai Surprise." I forget the exact quote but it was essentially "this woman does not understand humor"...

:-)

...but he'd already spent a big chunk of Beatle money on the movie before he realized his mistake.

19. John "Dukes of Hazzard" Schneider.
In the summer of 1981, he made the national Top 20 with a horrendous remake of one of my least favorite Elvis tunes, "It's Now Or Never."

22. Finally!
Johnson released the "bloated with guest appearances by his superstar friends" albums, but Philip Michael Thomas went for the "Teddy Pendergrass with a hint of reggae" style, which in his hands became "extremely slimy bedroom seduction music."

I was curious at the time and bought a sealed copy of the Thomas album for 99 cents...if anyone remembers "cut outs" with either a hole punched in the corner of the jacket or a piece cut off.

35. Let's just call it "80's anonymous."
T-shirts with suits were novel ideas that still resonate today. But if I need to roll up my sleeves, I think it would make more sense to take off my jacket.

Anyway, from fashion to music this was all a stunt. There was no there there. Oddly enough, that seems to work in the same way when singers want to act. If there is no there there, then there's no there over there either.

25. Telly Savalas, Joe Pesci, among others...
Yeah, I'm twisted, I collect albums I find "golden throats"...the Shatner, Cabot, and Webb albums are legendary stink bombs but rather amusing...I can add Telly Savalas, I have 2 lps, can't remember any notworthy songs he covered but do remember a gem titled "Who Loves Ya Baby"...

"Little Joe Pesci" started out as a singer, I have a cd with him doing "Got to Get You Into My Life", and yes, he sings in the same voice he speaks with...

Other atrocities:

Walter Brennan, "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town"
Joey Bishop, "Your Cheating Heart"
Danny Bonaduce "59th Street Bridge Song (Feeling Groovy"
Mae West, "When a Man Loves a Woman"
Bill Cosby, "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"
Wolfman Jack, "Sweet Caroline"

Sometimes good singers make bad lapses in judgement like ...

Bing Crosby, "Hey Jude" (from "Hey Bing!)
Mel Torme, "Sunshine Superman"
Roger Whittaker, "Good Morning Starshine"
Julie London, "Yummy Yummy Yummy"

30. Another good singer/bad judgment case
Ella Fitzgerald's COUNTRY album, Misty Blue. I revere Ella like none other, but LAWDY, that is some awful music. She did an album of "inspirational music" that also sucked, but it looks like a recording masterpiece next to Misty Blue.

26. Back in the old days (the 60's)
In the 60's if you had a TV series they gave you a record deal. That gave us wonderful songs (with alot of technical help) by:

Patty Duke - The Patty Duke Show - 'Please Don't Just Stand There'
'Say something funny to me'

Shelly Fabares - The Donna Reed Show - 'Johnny Angel'

Johnny Crawford - The Rifleman - 'Today is Cindys Birthday'

Paul Peterson - The Donna Reed Show - 'My Dad'

and of course Rick and David Nelson - The Ozzie and Harriet Show -
but they could actually sing.

Anyone remember any others from that era?

28. a couple...
Edited on Sat May-29-04 09:41 PM by countfloyd
Jerry Mathers (the Beav) "Wind Up Toy"
Ted Cassidy (Addams Family) "The Lurch"
Joe E. Ross (Car 54 Where Are You) "Ooh Ooh"
Hayley Mills "Jeepers Creepers"

Of course in the 70s the Brady Bunch put out a few albums, as did John Travolta...

Since Gomer Pyle (Jim Nabors) turned out to have a good singing voice, someone decided to give George Lindsey a shot at recording fame...I've seen copies of "Goober Sings!" but have yet to hear it!

(edited for spelling)
