I wan to check out a good suspense/horror novel.
Any suggestions from a non-religious perspective? (I'm not into the priests defeating the antichrist genre).

7. Shutter Island is one of the best books I've read recently...
Edited on Fri May-28-04 01:49 PM by Richardo
...more psychological suspense than horror, and MAN is it good. You will not be disappointed. Candy's right, the ending will kick your ass (OK that's a paraphrase :) )

4. "Ghost Story"
by Peter Straub

Also "IT" and "Pet Sematary" by Stephen King

All three are infinitely scarier than their screen adaptations.

8. Excellent novel
Also the inspiration for Nirvana's "Scentless Apprentice". I've never read anything that described the sense of smell so vividly.

9. Harvest Home by Tom Tryon or "They Whisper" by Robert Olen Butler"
truly scary and very well written. His book "The Other" is better known, but I loved "Harvest Home." The Butler is not exactly suspense or horror, but is both suspenseful and horrifying.

10. Is this the "Harvest Home" the Bette Davis TV movie was based on?
I don't remember much about it, other than that Bette Davis made a very frightening town matron.

11. The Throat and Koko by Peter Straub
or, if you're into the apocalyptic stuff, I'm a huge Robert McCammon fan - check out especially Stinger and Swan Song. I'm also very fond of Blue World.

18. 2 Big Thumbs Up for FPW, particularly the Repairman Jack series
This is a great series about a man who "fixes" unfortunate situations for people--sort of a lower-tech Equalizer. And he keeps running into Lovecraftian nasties along the way. The series starts with "The Tomb".

F. Paul Wilson is, for my money, the most underrated horror writer today. I've never been disappointed in any of his books, and "The Keep" is one of the scariest books I've ever read. (Yeah, I know the movie sucked, but like most film adaptations, it bears very little relation to the book.)

16. A virtually unheard of novel by Stephen King...
Edited on Fri May-28-04 10:16 PM by HOWLIN_WOLF
entitled "Rose Madder". Guaranteed...you get three pages in and you won't be able to put it down! Some friendly advice though...DO NOT read it if you are alone in the house or in a dimly lit room! This novel scared the bejeezus outta me! You can actually read a snippet of it here http://www.stephenkingshop.com/books/king/books/RoseMadder1995.htm :scared:

21. rose madder's
one of my faves, along with his other overtly feminist novels, gerald's game and dolores claiborne, which is much better than the quite good movie.

also, pretty much anything by daphne du maurier.

17. The Haunting of Hill House
by Shirley Jackson...much scarier than the 1964 movie version...don't do what I did, though, and read it all in one day, staying up til 2 am finishing it! My bedroom door was closed, all of a sudden something starts banging at it! Nearly had a heart attack! It was my cat, trying to get in!
