Two thought-provoking movies: Pleasantville & Powder
Anyone see these two? I thought they were brilliant, on the surface they are feel-good family films, but each has a very subversive undercurrent. Any thoughts?

2. Ive only seen pleasantville
and it's one of my all time favorites. It attacks conservativism, fear of change, bigotry, sexual awakening, women's equality, fear of the arts while being unremittingly beautiful from a cinematographic standpoint. Great movie.

6. agreed, great movie
I thought of it specifically as an analogy of the "sexual revolution" - but there was plenty of liberal culture symbolism throughout the movie. What amazed me was how well it worked on so many levels, and it did look *great* on film.

7. Helped with my marriage...
After I came out as bi...the metaphors about living in a world with colors instead of just black and white was very powerful to me and my wife (particularly her)

We're both librarians, so the content about libraries was meaningful as well...and Tobey Maguire, Joan Allen, William H. Macy, Reese Witherspoon, and Jeff Daniels all in the same movie - it's great!

3. I haven't seen Powder in awhile but watched Pleasantville a week ago.
I agree that this movie has volumes to say. I think it was overlooked as a piece of fluff but it is very topical, especially in todays climate of intolerance.

4. OMG!! I Absolutely LOVED "Powder"...
A real 'thinker' that one was. So sad... with light moments that made you feel great about being alive! The gay undertones were definitely of interest to me too.

5. I get the creeps re: Victor Salva movies
Edited on Thu Aug-21-03 03:26 PM by Cleve Steamer
And not the good, "horror movie" kind of creeps.

OK, so Salva has paid his debt to society. And I'm not morally opposed to watching or supporting his films. Nevertheless, I'd rather not delve into the psyche of a child rapist:

On edit: in case it was unclear, Victor Salva directed Powder.
