Would it be rude of me....?
Edited on Thu May-27-04 09:11 AM by MissMillie
My son's ROTC unit has its annual "End of the Year Banquet & Awards Ceremony" tonight. They're having it at the same place as last year. The location is fine, but the buffet last year was HORRIBLE (spaghetti & meatballs but the spaghetti sauce was completely void of any seasoning).

They did serve a salad last year, so I was thinking maybe I'd stop at the store on my way to the banquet and pick up a few slices of ham, turkey and cheese and just serve myself some salad and turn it into a chef's salad when I get back to my table.

Is this in poor taste?

Normally I'd wait till I get home, but this event is lengthy and I don't think I can go that long w/o supper.

Should I eat before I show up instead?

1. Eat before or afterward
...and pick at your plate or take one or two tastes of the awful spaghetti.

2. Eat before you go
I second that motion.

Sounds dreadful. And have fun for your son. :D

6. Eat before you go but...

...maybe take a protien bar/lo-carb/breakfast bar with you in case you get the major munchies during it. You could step outside the dinning room and have a quick snack if you get hungry

8. Well, you could bring your lunch meats....
And explain that you are on a low-carb diet. I think most people would understand. On the other hand, eating prior to the event and then eating only a salad is probably the least controversial thing to do. Me? I wouldn't care what people thought. :)

9. And the consensus is...
yes, poor taste.

I don't know why it is somehow more rude to acknowledge bad food than to serve it, but it is. As long as the food is at least barely edible, banquet guests are presumed to be there for reasons other than fine dining, and put up with it. How many rubber chickens have we all eaten...

Eat before and sample some of the tasteless glop to appear sociable and not be a kvetching crab. Even if you were to be a hero bringing food in from outside, it's not worth it.

And, you never know-- it might be better this year.

12. Not at all.
I add ingredients all the time that I like and no one else does. Mrs bearfan doesn't like the same stuff as me so I make stuff different for me when I am cooking. I do all the cooking too.
