Greatest cat toy ever
The kids have the cats running from one end of the house to another chasing a laser beam.

It cost me $2.50 CAN ~ $1.85 US.

I remember when my father bought a similar powered laser for his science lab. Cost $10,000.

Oh well.

1. The Laser Beam and the wire toy that's been around for ages
The one with the bent wire that has a small piece of cardboard on the end of it.

15. The "cat dancer"
yeah, my guys love that thing! They are also crazy about the "Panic Mouse 360"; though my Maine Coon breaks the string attachments fairly quickly.

I discovered that a few years back. Funny, they never seem to wise up to the futility of it, either.

3. I have seven cats..
only two of them recognize the laser at all, but it's worth it! They go completely bonkers over it. The other five ignore it all together.
I suppose they're just above that type of frivolity. Cats... go figure!

6. When they put their paws over the light stop it
That makes them think that they captured it and they will check under their hands to find out if it is still there.

I play that trick on my cats all of the time.

7. Our favorite is really low tech.
We took an old tube sock and stuffed it full of other old socks and catnip with a pill bottle full of beans in the toe. Tie the end off in a knot and give it to the cat to wrestle with.

He loves it--and is on his second sock covering now because he chewed thru the old sock. He'll sneak up on it and jump over and just chew the hell out of it while he's kicking it with his hind feet.

Gawd, they are strange animals.

30. I tied some old sport socks together and used it to lure my Siamese
cat to run around me (I would sit on the floor on my knees) until he was worn out.....he LOVED chasing this long, knotted sock for fun and exercise each day, being an indoor cat.

for 2 bucks!!! The darn thing even has a WARNING label!

But I STILL wanna know...

Where the HELL is my FLYING CAR???

:toast:

on edit: Even MORE fun... I got the Craftsman Laser Level... You can put it on a tripod and shoot the thing thru some haze or fog and it's the KEWLEST!!! It bends the beam into a long, flat 'sci-fi' lookin' effect! It's at least 90 degrees wide!

10. A live field mouse
Edited on Mon May-24-04 12:31 AM by TheWizardOfMudd
I've never seen their eyes get so intense when confronted with real, live prey.

Edit: Not that I have ever turned loose a field mouse for a cat to get. But when I was a kid, I would catch spiders and bugs and put them in a jar together. Nothing ever happened.

11. a wad of paper
I am serious. I can wad up a blank sheet from my printer and it is the greatest cat toy to ever grace the planet. He NEVER tires of it, and I thought the wine corks were his favorite until then.

He plays endless rounds of 'fetch' with either the paper or the cork, but especially the paper. Hours of fun.

13. my parents have a cat
She collected those things by playing with them for long periods of time until they disappeared under the oven or the fridge. When they moved, they did some cleaning and found dozens upon dozens of the things. Amazing what fascinates them. :-) Don't know if she still gets new ones now.

I believe in your theory - the wads of paper our cat plays with might as well be free - they certainly aren't conventional.

29. Ping Pong (table tennis) balls.
My cats LOVE these things. Of course, human involvement is essential. I roll them on the floor (or "flick" them or throw them) and it never fails to get the cats running. What's really funny is watching them trying to hang onto them once they've "caught" them. They're slippery and pop right up out of their paws. The cats especially love it when I roll them down a flight of stairs.

20. Simba loves corks
and Monty loves plastic toy jacks and fake mice. The laser pointer is also a big hit (have to be very careful not to point it at their eyes). A drawstring I pulled out of the waist of some pajamas will amuse them for hours when dangled and dragged around the house.

24. Kitty fishing pole with a piece of marabou as bait.
My cat has an apparent grudge against pink marabou (well, so do I, but....) She will stalk, kick and try to destroy that thing for hours.

The other cat hates the pink marabou thing, too, but he prefers his laser pointer, as well.

32. I googled "weasel ball" because I saw one at KB Toys and thought
it would make a great cat toy. Well...might make a good cat toy... here's a funny little story from the internet-

New Toys
by David Yehudah, Bellflower, CA, USA

I just got the critters a new toy. It's a battery-powered ball, kind of heavy, with a piece of fur attached that's supposed to look like a weasel. It's called "Weazel ball!"

Mac, Sasha, Willoughby, and Sticks wre all stretched out by the pool when I turned this thing on and set it down near them. It started rolling around with a jerky movement,
snapping and popping the "weasel," looking for all the world like something frantically playing with a ball too big for it to handle.

The kids didn't know what to make of it. I thought they would start some kind of jumping and biting attack game, but they just kind of nosed it around and avoiding getting hit by
it. They were surprisingly calm, considering how that thing was jumping around, just begging to be played with.

Sasha sat up sleepily and looked at it for a moment, then lay back down and closed her eyes.

About that time the ball rolled up against her nose and swatted her across the face with the weasel, then began vigorously trying to roll over her head. Annoyed, she swatted back, and that thing just climbed all over her.

Now she was mad clear through; with a hissspit and a low growl she dared it to disturb her again, and it just swarmed her. She threw herself at the tormentor, wrapping all four paws around it and sinking claws and teeth into every available crevice. Ball, weasel, and cat rolled at high speed across the narrow patio and into the pool, Sasha wailing like a banshee just before they hit the water.

Talk about walking on water; Sasha barely got wet, but she is royally ticked and probably will be for a while. For some reason, though, she isn't interested in playing with the Weazel ball.
