First Rap Song You Ever Heard
Laugh if you can -- Blondie-- Rapture. I was on the first wave, although it was brought to me by a white woman.

1. Rapper's Delight
A friend's older sister had the 12-inch single. Sadly, it was the last true rap song I heard until Run-DMC's "Walk This Way" in 1986. (And no, I don't think of Blondie's "Rapture" as a true rap song!)

2. No, it's not a "true" rap" song, but it did show a whole new generation
a new artform.

31. Me too. "Rapper's Delight"

Sugar Hill Gang. A friend had the record, and we would listen to it all the time. At the time, it was the coolest thing I had ever heard.

Not meaning any disrespect here, because I think it's a great record, but when you're 9 years old, these are some lyrics you can really appreciate:

have you ever went over a friends house to eat
and the food just aint no good
i mean the macaroni's soggy the peas are mushed
and the chicken tastes like wood ...

so your heart starts pumpin and you think of a lie
and you say that you already ate
and your friend says man there's plenty of food
so you pile some more on your plate ...

so you bust out the door while its still closed
still sick from the food you ate
and then you run to the store for quick relief
from a bottle of kaopectate

I used to repeat that part over and over again. I also liked saying "Hotel, motel, Holiday Inn". I was 9, what can I say?

First one I ever heard that I even sorta liked (I'd heard "Rapture" beofre, of course). Then Anthrax and Public Enemy blew me away with "Bring the Noise."

10. I think it was that Grandmaster Flash song--
Edited on Sat May-22-04 10:48 PM by notmyprez
I'm spacing out on the name right now. The one that goes something like, "Don't push me 'cause I'm close to the edge..." The name of the song is on the tip of my tongue...help me with it, please.

I can't remember what "Rapper's Delight" sounded like, so I'm not sure if I'd heard it or not, although odds are I had. Which of these songs was first?

Edited to add: Was the name of the song "The Message"?

That would be the first one I remember. "Little Jack Horner sittin' on a corner with no shoes or clothes. This ain't funny but he took his money and sniffed it up his nose!" Great song.

of that period -- late 60s, early 70s -- can be considered forefathers (and mothers) of rap.

24. "Rapture." Totally.
I thought it was the coolest song ever recorded, upon the first few listenings.

Rap in its present populuar form has yet to grow on me.. although there are a few songs I love.

I'm so very '80s, though. When I think rap, I think "Well now you see what you wanna be, just have your party on TV!"

Jesus, I'm lame.

33. Rapper's Delight, but the one that made me go wow
The Message by Grandmaster Flash and Furious Five:

My son said, Daddy, I don't wanna go to school
'cuz the teacher's a jerk, he must think I'm a fool
And all the kids smoke reefer, I think it'd be cheaper
if I just got a job, learned to be a street sweeper
Or dance to the beat, shuffle my feet
Wear a shirt and tie and run with the creeps
'cuz it's all about money, ain't a damn thing funny
You got to have a con in this land of milk and honey
They pushed that girl in front of the train
Took her to the doctor, sewed her arm on again
Stabbed that man right in his heart
Gave him a transplant for a brand new start
I can't walk through the park 'cuz it's crazy after dark
Keep my hand on my gun 'cuz they got me on the run
I feel like a outlaw, broke my last glass jaw
Hear them say "You want some more?"
Livin' on a see-saw

Don't push me 'cuz I'm close to the edge
I'm trying not to lose my head
Say what?

It's like a jungle sometimes
It makes me wonder how I keep from goin' under
It's like a jungle sometimes
It makes me wonder how I keep from goin' under

I dont remember the title, but it went:

I was at the Ponderosa, rappin' to the beat
Da-hah, Dah-hah
Da-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha"

"I wanna rock you Aretha Franklin"
