ROBERT MUNIZ

Sgt. Robert "Pete" Muniz, a disabled Vietnam veteran, died Saturday, May 15, 2004, at his residence.

After graduating from High School in 1965, he enlisted in the Army and served in Vietnam in the Mekong Delta as a squad leader in B Company of the 19th Infantry Division. During his military service, he received the Purple Heart at age 19, when a Viet Cong mine exploded beneath him, leaving him severely wounded.

Throughout his service in the Army, he was honored with several other awards, including the Combat Infantry Badge, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, a Commendation Medal, a National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.

We went thru school together. What a happy guy - wanted to be an actor. Then he joined the Army. He was never the same after he came back. Depressed he drank heavily for many years. After a failed marriage he lived alone.

Some didn't make it home, some came home, but their lives were changed forever. The mine explosion killed a few soldiers in his squad, I don't think he ever forgave himself for surviving.

Rest In Peace, Pete.

3. Thank you
I had a big crush on him all through high school. We dated for awhile before he went to Nam. He had sent me pictures from Nam that I have kept tucked in a Bible all these years.

The wake is tonight - I'm going but... Such a great guy.

He hated bush and this war. He kept saying they'll f*ck these guys up, too.

He suffered so much after Nam, it was painful to watch. No one could help him. When his cousin called me last night to tell me, we talked about his life, now maybe he has found peace.

I remember asking him which movie depicted what Nam was really like. Was is 'The Deer Hunter' or another movie I can't remember. His answer was 'Apocalypse Now'.

13. My sympathy to you Madmax.
Your loss reminds me of the first line in Ford Madox Ford's 1915 novel, The Good Soldier. The narrator begins the novel saying: This is the saddest story I have ever heard. RIP Sgt. Muniz. Another good soldier lost.
