1. spoiler post, don't read if you don't want to know the fight result.
I cannot believe it. I didn't see the fight. I just couldn't/wouldn't ante up the $50.00 Good thing too. I would hate to fork over that cash for less than two rounds. I am interested in seeing this fight on hbo next week, or whenever. It is funny, Jones was bitching about last fight losing the weight too fast, and having a tooth infection. This time he really shouldn't have any excuses. Although, I do have to say this, thinking some aspects of boxing are shady. Since Jones lost in such a decisive manner, this sets up the possibility of a third fight between them. That is probably another, what $10 million for each fighter?? But to your point, this really does make the chances of Jones jumping up the Heavy weight very slim. Welcome to DU...Kevin.

2. sorry about the spoiler.....
should have put up a warning or something, Jones made 6, Tarver made 2 for this fight, next one might be something like Jones 7, Tarver 4.....
even though they're both over the hill, I was kind of looking forward to a Tyson-Jones bout, even though it would have been better about 8 years ago.....

3. It was a heck of a fight
last night. Never good to attack a tall lightheavyweight who can punch. Dick Tiger found that out when he fought Bob Foster, a man who had been denied his shot too long. Roy should have gotten a divorce from boxing years ago, when he lost interest.
I suspect that, as many great but old fighters tend to do, Roy will be determined to come back for a "big" win. The human parasite Don King will put him in against a heavyweight who will be a high-risk fight. Roy used to be almost impossible to beat, but time takes a toll. The punch that hit him last night would never have touched him five years ago. Time passes even the great fighters by.
My question: where would you rate him among the light heavyweight greats?

4. one of the best ever.....
even though I'm no fan of his, I have to admit he was one of the greats.....
I agree he should have packed it in a few years back.....
What do you think the chances are of Jones-Vitali Klitschko, maybe after Jones-Tarver 3, seems like how he might want to finish his career, although a loss in one would pretty much be the end for him.....

5. Very good analysis, H20 Man
I went to the fight Saturday night and knew Jones would have his hands full. Tarver is a much younger 35, boxing wise, and those physical traits are always going to give Jones fits. After winning the last two rounds decisively in November, but getting grief over the decision, Jones probably did not have enough fear of Tarver and wanted to make a statement.

Jones was always a super middleweight who came along when that weight class was bankrupt. I went to the Toney fight in '94. That Roy Jones was among the 5 best fighters of all time.

As a light heavy Jones would have surrendered height and reach to many of history's best, and probably not enough punching power to put away the elite. But it's a little known fact that Jones retains by far the best percentage of rounds won of all time. In his prime Jones would have outslicked and outpointed every light heavy I have seen.

6. Sad moment for me
My favorite boxer's decade of dominance in the boxing organization crumbled with a single punch. I wouldn't mind a loss but ko'd in the 2nd round.

7. Same here
I was prepared for a lost decision or two in another couple of years, if Jones hangs around that long. But a one punch KO of Roy Jones Jr. was unthinkable. I saw it and still don't believe it.

Jones was actually winning the fight until then. Tarver had done squat and Jones was flicking right hand leads, up on his feet not against the ropes like last November. The he lunged after a missed right and was tagged. I could tell almost immediately he was hurt and no cinch to recover in time.

One positive aspect: the crowd at the fight and later in the Las Vegas casinos was very appreciative of Jones. I thought there would be plenty of meanspirited "good, I never liked him" crap but only one jerk said anything like that.

8. It is official. I am now old.
Roy and I are about the same age. For years I have been saying he was the best athlete on the planet. Now I can no longer say that. I am bummed.
