God, it SUCKS to be more attractive once you're committed
I took my girlfriend and her parents out for dinner tonight to celebrate her 4.0 GPA in grad school. (YAY!) And all through dinner, I'm doing my best to ignore the superbly beautiful waitress waiting on us at a table of 18 at a Japanese Hibachi restaurant.

The waitress was treating me different than everyone else, thanking me repeatedly and trying to interact with me. It's hard to explain it, but it was intense. My girlfriend picked up on it. I was sitting there trying to tell myself she was angling for a better tip, but if she was playing me, she wasn't playing anyone else. As she came to bring a beer to the guy sitting next to me, she discreetly rubbed my back and set me on fire. On my way out, ahead of my party, she tried to draw me into a most unwelcome conversation. I dodged and almost ran to escape her attention.

I have no doubts about my one-woman-man status, but god, it sucks to be haunted by the prospect of a goddess when you already have your mate happily by your side. I thank the stars above I will never see her again. Next semester we'll celebrate somewhere else. And lead me not into temptation...

2. They're not goddesses
There's an old saying, "every woman want what another woman's got" and you're right in the middle of that. Nearly every heterosexual man has had the experience of becoming a "chick magnet" once he's hooked up with someone who loves him.

High-dominance woman love playing shark. Men have almost no defense against it, while women learn in grade school to spot a shark at 100 paces.

But women like these are the equivalent of male "players". If you were to dump your beloved for this so-called goddess, the moment you got your arms around her, she'd freeze as fast as NYC in The Day After Tomorrow. And if she did decide to keep you around, she'd be cracking the whip 24/7 until you summoned up the courage to dump her sweet ass and spend the next year or two grieving over the real goddess you threw away.

So you didn't have an encounter with a goddess -- you had an encounter with an incubus.

4. I like the way you think
There is truth in what you say.

An incubus. I did indeed feel it. I wouldn't give up my sweetheart for anything. But I was tempted momentarily. The real goddess is sleeping in the next room, unaware of my brief wobble. Thankfully, she has nothing to fear. I'm solid. I just hate the haunting. I'm too old for that shit.

8. thats the way it goes, i guess...
they never care when your unattached, but once you are, they want your attention.

i guess its something about 'proving' that the guy is committed enough to be in a stable relationship, possibly, who knows? i certainly don't.

10. Wow, how I hope your girlfriend doesn't read DU.
}(

Thanks for sharing, though... and it's amazing how attractive one feels and conveys once one is committed and loved. :-) It's one of life's crueler ironies, isn't it?

11. A friend of mine became a widower......
within a month his phone was ringing off the hook! I think women look for a man willing to commit, and are willing to steal one away, or grab one as soon as he's available. My friend remarried within a year (to a woman 25 years huis junior!) and is happily ensconsed in famly number 2!
