New indie rock and punk bands?
Listen, I am stuck in old fart mode and I admit it.

I have worn out my U2, REM, Pixies, Pogues, Sonic Youth, Liz Phair, Smiths, Nirvana, Husker Du, Replacements, Minutemen, Firehose, Dead Kennedys, Clash, Ramones, Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies, and Repo Man soundtrack CDs.

What should I listen to that is modern?

NOFX is nice. White Stripes songs that I have heard sound interesting but some people say they have already sold out.

I feel lost in the late eighties and early 90's and I want out.

What kind of good indie rock and punk rock stuff is there out nowadays?

2. Let's see...
Sonic Youth is still good...their new one "Nurse" is one of my favorites this year...

Quite honestly, the underground is flush with a new "experimental folk" movement...it's folk music for those of us that need some gonads with the folk...

I heartily recommend:

Fursaxa
P. G. Six
Born Heller
Animal Collective
Black Forest/Black Sea
Six Organs of Admittance

A good site that hits all the best in underground & indie stuff is http://www.pitchforkmedia.com . That's where I first heard of the Animal Collective, and they have their pulse on what's new and cool...

3. i have the same problem
i'm guessing you're probably roughly the same age as i am? (I'm 34.) And for me the cutoff date would be more starting around late '90s. I'm also out of touch with very current music, and most of the new stuff I do listen to is more along the lines of techno, electronica, drum'n'bass, breakbeat, downtempo and not so much indie rock.

One decent source of current indie rock, if you're willing to pay money for a monthly subscription, is: Emusic. Many current indie and punk bands (along with artists of just about every other genre) have made certain selected albums of theirs available for download in each album's entirety from that site.

(And before anyone makes some rash "you idiot, why are you paying money for mp3's" comment, eMusic has a LOT of great stuff you can't find that easily on KaZaa or Overnet, and they offer entire albums so you don't have to scrounge around on the file sharing services for individual songs. And downloading from Kazaa, at least for me, can be a bit of a pain in the ass.)

5. I like all of those bands you mentioned
Check out the Urinals
http://www.happysquid.com/HSR%20site/URI%20site/fr_urih...

They started in the late 70s and are still at it. They have a new CD out, you can listen to clips of it here:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000DZTO...

If you like the Pixies, check out Frank Black's solo stuff. He did two very high energy albums, Cult of Ray and Los Angeles, soon after the Pixies. His current work is a lot more mellow mostly, but I like it a lot.

Another group I have been listening to a lot is the Actionslacks. The album The Scene is out of Sight is a good one to start with. They just released a new one that I have not heard yet.

Have you ever hear Guided by Voices? They are another band that has been around since the late 70s. Started out very low fi, later albums are pretty produced. They are one of those bands people either love or hate.

7. Just had to add
I'm 35, born in 69 too.

Also, the Urinals have a song called Ack Ack Ack Ack. You can pretend they are singing to you. lol.

I worked in a record store in the late 80s and 90s, and a lot of my taste has been somewhat frozen at that time too. It's been thawing out a lot lately though.

Another band I really like is Queens of the Stone Age. I have listened to them over and over again, til I can't listen anymore. They make me feel like I did when I first heard Nirvana.

Also, the Descendants are still producing some great stuff. Lot of political stuff in their new one, they could be du-ers.

8. Allow me to say that I don't think there are any good new bands
Edited on Tue May-11-04 10:21 AM by Dolomite
My musical tastes are almost indentical to your list.

I try and listen to new bands all the time - but I can't find any that I really like. The last Rancid release was pretty good - but Christ - could they possible rip off the Clash any more?

What comforts me now?

Sebadoh (almost any of their discs)

Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I

and when I'm in a rowdy mood:

Most Precious Blood - Our Lady of Annihilation.

MPB is also the only band on this short list that is still together.

Embrace the possibility that there are no new bands that are any good.

Edtited to add:

The best way to find new favorite bands is to start listening to Various Artist compilation CD's. May I suggest: "Your Scene Sucks" by GoKart records, and Sub City's "Plea For Peace/Take Action" as two excellent places to start.

41. curious what bands would have to be like for you to like them
Seriously. Is it an issue of sold out/sound/too retro-reductionist/not political enough? As an old school punk, I am listening to a lot of "punk" that I missed when I was in grad school and doing other things like playing in my own band and raising a kid. Like NOFX. I like Rancid since they remind me of the Clash somewhat and there appears to be a "melody" and some poetry to them.

The post-metal stuff( whatever that is called -what they play on mainstream alternative radio) leaves me cold and makes me miss "real" metal, the stuff from the 70s. And I was never a big metal fan.

17. Oh, how we hate it when our friends become successful.
The very notion of an artist "selling out" makes me cringe - not because I dislike sell outs, but because I think it is the dumbest reason to disregard a band or musician. Simply because a band happens to be signed to a major label and makes more money than they used to, the hipster know-nothings say they have sold out and cast them aside. What a bunch of fuckwits. If the music is good, who the fuck cares if they make a lot of money. The sell out accusation is such a cop out. Frankly, if they are making money for recording quality music I'm happy for them.

As for the White Stripes, listen and decide for yourself. Just because I think they are the best thing to happen to music in a long doesn't mean you will. But it doesn't mean you won't either. Listen to the music, and throw the rest of the tastemaker op/ed shit out of the window. Listen objectively.

Its about changing your style to get popular.

44. I have to admit I first thought the White Stripes were
laughing all the way to the bank. But then, I listened a bit more and decided that they reminded me of people I knew in the "scene" - and they were certainly one of the most raw things on the Grammies.

I also think the sell-out label is unfair and most bands play so more people will hear their music, not just to be rich or famous. When I first got into punk it was uncool to even make a record. That seems so silly now.

18. I so sick of hearing "Sold Out."
That such an obscurist's argument--"Oh, I used to like R.E.M., but everything since the hibi-mix single of 'Radio Free Europe' sucks." Would a sane person make the argument that everything the Simpsons have done since the Tracey Ullman Show sucks? And if so, wouldn't you find them an asshole?

(I know it wasn't you that use the phrase, just venting here)

White Stripes are great. The fact that Jack is dating my woman and was in a good movie and recorded a phenomenal album for Loretta Lynn only means he has more than one color crayon up his sleeve. Chrissakes...

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are mighty tasty. Nellie McKay is absolutely world-shattering. I'll even go so far as to plug my friend's local band, Skintight (www.skintightband.com, or .net, I don't remember, to hear songs). They are like Blondie covering the Jam and have been getting a lot of ink lately. Of course, as soon as they get a major label deal, I'm gonna quit liking them. $%#&ing Sell-outs...

I have heard they changed their style to appeal to a broader range of fans (ie they Sold out) but this a simple reference to what someone else told me about a band I barely know.

I like the stuff I have heard so far.

Which is basically Fell In Love with a Girl and Seven Nation Army.

that early. When I saw the Green tour at an arena after they went major label, I thought this is great, they have Throwing Muses opening for them. How else was that ever going to happen? And they brought a lot of cool bands along with them and supported artists and great political causes. It that is selling out, then I am all for it.

Maybe 2nd greatest. Radiohead opened. That's right, Radiohead OPENED for REM. I heard the entire "Bends" record before the band became popular. Immediately bought the record. REM came out and brought the house down.

Saw them again last year and I saw Radiohead last year as well. REM put on the better show, IMHO.
