1. Where's the hidden agenda?
You know, the tobacco industry once promoted cigarette smoking as a safe and get this, "healthy" activity.

I would be skeptical of this man's position. There may be a hidden agenda.

After all, the food industry in the Western world make their profits be convincing people to overeat.

I am not trying to make light of anyone's weight. But it is hard to fathom how being overweight or obese might make one healthier, unless of course, one uses tobacco in an attempt to stay thin.

The issue of mortality really isn't all that simple as smokers tend to be thinner than non-smokers.

If you ask me, comparing overweight people to thin people in terms of mortality and not taking into consideration other confounding variables like tobacco use seems to be a little dishonest. Besides, folks with illnesses such as AIDs, cancer, etc. tend to be quite thin and have shortened life spans.

These things need to be taken into consideration.

Needless to say, I am one who still believes that obesity is a serious health issue facing the developed world today.

4. You might be right.
In fact, I, too, believe that a large amount of fat is not good for you. On the other hand, the food police, PETA, the CDC, and various politicians all have agendas too.

I believe the way to handle the "obesity" problem is to put he information out there and let people decide what they want to do, real;izing that there will be consequences to themselves and to their families if they decide wrongly. Let freedom ring.

I'm petite, and my mom is petite, and I've learned the hard way that being skinny is NO protection against life-threatening illness. Heart disease isn't just about food, it is about the air you breathe, and there are lots of political reasons why the powers that be don't want to clean up our air. People with asthma will end up with heart disease, skinny or not. It is extremely discouraging.

On top of that, I also have osteoporosis in the family, and they're right -- skinny older women break a hip and they die.

I am very concerned for a multiple of reasons, not least because I've had several friends die too young of disease -- and, disturbingly, all of them were thin.

What people don't realize is that thin people don't find it very easy to gain weight. The whole "just eat a sandwich, honey" may work if your illness is anorexia, but if you already eat a good diet, it is surprisingly difficult to put on a few pounds.
