A poem I thought I'd share with all of you
Anyone who knows me, knows that I'm about to finish a semester at my local Community College, where I had the honor and privilege to be in a class taught by Wayne Gilbert. I wrote this for him.

Standing in your shadow.
All of us desperate to see if we can absorb the albedo of your inner light.
Far too many are losing the fight
Because we can’t tell our right from our rite
Slipping faster and deeper into the night
Until you showed us the difference between vision and sight

Seeing you up there,
Knowing you’re talking directly to me
Just like you’re talking directly to everyone else
You lead by example in a world filled with
Do-Not
As-As
I-I
Say-Do

Double-talking rhetoric.

You are the center of the universe for so many
Who secretly wish that their own fathers loved them
Even half as much as you.
Hoping that they can touch a future life
With a ripple of the shockwave
That started at your fingertips.

Opening the doors of perception
You use education as the exception
To the rules that they can’t mention
Due to the tension that they’ve lived in
You’d cause an infant horsefly to grin
Sacrificing your prejudicial sin
By celebrating the power we all hold within.
Fuck a fire,
I’m talking about the mushroom cloud of revolution
And the explosion caused by our nuclear fusion
Because too many people are abusin’ the conclusion
By not looking at the process that got them there.

Just between you and me,
I’m hoping that someday
I could be the future father
To a parentless child who is searching…
Searching for a shadow
That they can find comfort in.
But until then, I’ll be content to
Stand in your shadow,
Watching you dance in the reflection of the glow from my two eyes.
