Is Karen Carpenter the Judy Garland of the latter 20th Century?
Edited on Thu May-06-04 05:16 PM by Taverner
Serious question - the sorrow and death mythos is there, as well as the contrast of syrup/sadness....

2. nah
Judy Garland is the Judy Garland of the latter 20th Century. They only died 14 years apart.

Karen Carpenter's mythos will never reach that of Judy Garland's. JG was not just a pop singer. She was an actress, a singer, a stage performer, an icon.

6. Exactly right, Dookus
Karen Carpenter was a talented and pleasant singer. Judy had the whole package -- sing, dance, act, the whole cha-cha-cha.
Her biography on PBS' "American Masters" this season was quite the eye-opener.

I think "icon" isn't overstating it.

7. I don't know
Karen Carpenter had a sickness. Very curable, but she ignored the warning signs.
Judy, on the other hand, was mentally tormented by the trappings of fame, and a horrendous social life.
Yes, quite a contrast between both their onstage/offstage personnae.

8. Hmmmm not sure I agree with ya there
Watch Todd Haynes "Superstar: Karen Carpenter Story"

It's done completely with Barbie dolls...sounds weird I know but after 5 minutes you forget you're watching dolls. Richard Carpenter made sure it was banned, but you can find it out there.

But it sheds light into Karen Carpenter's illness - it went beyond anorexia, and was very much the product of her overbearing family life and parents. With so very little in her life that was her own, she felt control in her dieting (an illusion many anorexics have).
