Boot Camp 1951. 180 Junior Officer of the Day.
Ah! Ultimate power over the life and liberty of others, my very first taste of POWER!

The JOOD,(ME) wore a white cartridge belt carried a night stick and a flash light. A black and white arm band told the recruit world "I was it."---Junior Officer of the Day.

Part of the JOOD's job was to inspect the night time barracks where all the boots were safely asleep. While inspecting one barracks about 0200 hours I tripped over an object lying on the deck. It was a recruit sailor. He was the watch stander and he was sleeping on duty.

What to do?

1. That's one raisin who's going to a week's worth of 'Happy Hour'.
I'm jumping to conclusions by calling him a raisin. I remember that the term 'raisin' only applies to new recruits who hair hasn't grown back in from the initial shearing and who have not been allowed to hem their trousers yet.

3. LOL!....At Great Lakes (USN) it was "service weeks".....
Three weeks into boot camp was service week. You got assigned to do mess hall duty or you got to boss around incoming recruits cuz you had two weeks seniority over them. Hoo-boy, the power tripping was something to watch!

I got mess duty.

4. Unless you were in a '900' Company.
Then you spent Service Week hanging out in the Drill Hall practicing your marching/drilling/singing.

I never, during my stint in the USN, spent a single day either working in the Mess or in the Laundry. Ain't I a stinker?

7. Indeed, you are!...........
Man, I served time in many a mess hall. Seems like every time I showed up at a new duty station I had to spend three weeks washing everybody's dishes.

After service week at Great Lakes, I got assigned to.....it wasn't the drill team, I can't remember what they called it...oh yeah, "staff". I think it was a four man team. One carried the company flag, and the other three did that fancy drill team stuff with the rifles. I got picked only because I fell within a certain height range. That was pretty cool. I got out of some shitty stuff, and thought I was a big shot.

5. First morning as JOOD, 1955.
It's 5:00 a.m. I'm supposed to wake up the DI (I forgot what he was called). I can't figure out what compartment he's in. After trying a couple of empty ones, I go back to our barracks. At 6:00 we're all out on the grinder for quarters. He isn't. I'm in deep s**t.
