You know what... Deadwood is the best show on TV.
HBO blessed me by showing the last 3 episodes tonight. I've watched it on the east and west coast feeds.

5. I think it is VERY historically accurate...
in respect to how people behave. If you have ever read "Violent Land" by David Courtwright it is exactly like it.

6. Deadwood is fantastic....
for me it's the purity, the rawness.

HBO sure knows how to produce some excellent programming I must say.

13. i tried to avoid it, but now i'm hooked
i'm a soprano head, never seen sex in the city, i also like 6 feet under.

hbo is bold, and they don't go by network rules intended to sell things. they can shock you, make you uncomfortable and be crusty and graphic without worrying about censors.

deadwood is bold and daring t.v.

14. I prefer Deadwood to The Sopranos
A good part of that is how much I hate NY/NJ accents (think fingernails on chalkboard), but I also have a hard time with shows in which I don't "like" some of the characters. I just don't have any sympathy for any of the characters in The Sopranos.

15. Where the West REALLY begins
Fort Worth is not too far away from where I sit and their slogan is "Where the West Begins."

I'd like to think that Deadwood is where the West really begins. Not since "Lonesome Dove" have I seen such a well-done western.

My wife's name is Jayne, so lately she's taken to talking a bit like ol' Calamity Jane and I enjoy it, even when she says, "Hey cocksucker, you're fu**in' dinner is ready."

16. I fucking love the show, though I must cynically note
HBO has cleverly found a way to present sex, violence, and degradation of women in an historically accurate format that no faction can complain about.

I also note that no ethnic group has been unfavorably portrayed. The one Indian, err indigenous American, err aboriginal person shown so far has been presented in the classic noble savage vein: he tried to kill a white man only as a spirit offering for his dead comrade's funeral. I'm curious to see how they develop storylines involving the Chinese presence in the camp - maybe they won't take kindly to having the smallpox tents set up in their district? - and if any ethnic portrayals are villainous as well as virtuous.

BTW, the worst cocksucker of the bunch is constantly referred to as an Englishman; and while I know there are Brits who look like him, and that the actor who portrays him was born in Lancashire, I can't help noticing that he looks (and talks) exactly like one of my former bosses whose ancestry was 100% Sicilian. I'm not saying it was the producers' intention to put me in mind of the Sopranos. I'm just saying that I, personally, can't help thinking of them every time I see Al Swearengen.

That Swearengen character is the finest bad guy I've seen in a long time. I love the show....

22. Funniest exchange
(As Calamity Jane returns to visit the widow)

E.B. Farnum: Be brief.

Jane: Be Fucked!

E.B.: Between her gutter mouth and the widow in the thrall of an opium haze, it should be a conversation for the ages.

(Do you think Ricky Jay can talk David Mamet into writing and directing an episode?)
