Stupid government policy #139735980
A gentleman here in town is originally from China, although he is now a naturalized US citizen. He and his American-born wife own and operates a restaurant here, and have for almost 20 years. His father recently passed away, and his elderly mother (83) is now alone. It is his wish and, as I understand it, his cultural obligation to now care for his mother; he wants to bring her here, to live with them.

She is willing to come. The Chinese government is willing to let her leave. He and his wife are willing to have her live with them, and see to her care and well-being. The problem? Uncle Sam says 'No'.

Apparently, the dear old soul is not a 'political refugee' living in fear of persecution, she's not persecuted for religious or other reasons, etc.; no, she is simply old and alone. This, it seems, is not enough reason top give her a resident-alien visa.

Excuse me for asking, but waht idiot thought up the policy that prevents this man from caring for his elderly mother?

:wtf:

2. Yeah, makes ya wonder, doesn't it?
God forbid that we should do anything humane, or that might set a good example for our fellow citizens, like taking care of one's elderly mother. :eyes:

3. Come on
Everyone is going to have some sad reason for coming to America, but we can't let everyone in. Why doesn't the guy go to China to take care of her?

I hope you're kidding... :eyes:

8. So?
She doesn't have a busniess here, and isn't a citizen here. I'm just saying that there are billions of people with heart rending stories of why they should come to America, and we just can't handle that.

9. Oh, horseshit.
How many 83 year-old widows with no other children, besides a successful businessman/citizen who is willing to support her 100%, are wanting to come here? Reality check!

:wtf:

11. Honestly?
I think there are probably quite a few elderly relatives of immigrants in America who would like to come here. And on top of that, are you proposing a "83 year old widow" exemption to immigration law? What you're proposing is more a "tugging at the heartstrings" exemption to immigration law, and virtually everyone in the world would qualify for that one. WE JUST CAN'T DO THAT.

Do I have to explain that to you?

15. Don't play Jesuit with me.
What danger is there in admitting an 83 year-old widow, whose son would totally provide for her care?

17. I didn't say there is any danger from this woman
I guess the real question here is, what exactly are you proposing? Are you saying that we should let this one woman into the country, because you happen to know her relative, and you feel pity for her? Because making one personal exception is not only unfair, it's untenable. If we let this exception fly, then we have to let in any person who has a sad story. Dig?

19. No, I don't 'dig'
It's a ridiculous policy. There is no danger to the Republic in permitting a son to decently care for his widowed mother. No burden to the taxpayers, no danger to national security---nada. do YOU 'dig'? :eyes:

20. Again, how exactly do we change this policy?
Give me a specific plan for how we rectify this policy. Do you get a senator or representative to use some clout, thereby making one exception for this friend of yours and leaving thousands, if not millions of other people in similarly sad situations? Or do we make some specific law, like "if you have the means to care for a relative, you can bring them over" because knowing this board, some people will start bitching about how that's unfair to immigrants who aren't as well off and we should start subsidizing this. You haven't made one statement regarding the questions I have asked over and over again, which are 1) why does this family deserve special treatment, 2) why this family, and not any of the myriad other people whose sad situations would be fixed by opening up our borders, and 3) how do you intend to get around the law.

21. We make exceptions all the time.
I'm not going to be sucked into some long, involved, philosophically-contentious debate about immigration policy in the LOUNGE, ffs! This is a patently ridiculous policy, insofar as it applies to this situation. Futhermore, your insinuation that i would somehow view it differently if I did NOT know the gentleman involved is insulting as hell!

24. Well there you go
You have no plan for getting around this policy. Moreover, you have no argument except "this is sad, so let's make an exception," and you refuse to answer the three simple and logical questions I layed out. If you're just going to stick to mumbling "it's not fair!" over and over again, there's really no point in debating with you.

I've stated it clearly--- make a humane exception; alternatively, interpret the policy in a manner that bears some realtionship to rational security needs.

Be as condescending and insulting as you like; I've eaten better than you for breakfast, and digested the meal without gas or heartburn.

5. my brother married a woman from China
As is apparently the custom in China, my sister-in-law wanted to have her mother here when their child was born. The US consulate in China was totally negative.

My brother contacted his 2 US senators and his Representative. Eventually the mother came.

Maybe you can help him by contacting the 'big guns'.

It was not supposed to be permanent but it looks like it will be. Permanence may be a problem plus assurance there's enuff $$ so there will be so need of govt help once she is here.
