Urgent appeal for Red Cross donations! Utica, IL 'devastated' by tornado.
Edited on Wed Apr-21-04 09:17 AM by Padraig18
I'm not sure if you're all aware of it, or not, but Utica, IL was essentially destroyed by a probable F4 tornado last night. Utica is (was, rather :( ) a beautiful little town in LaSalle County about 1 1/2 hours south of Chicago. The people there are without power, phone and clean water, and many of them are now basically homeless, at least 5 are dead, and the death toll is expected to rise as searchers continue their grim task.

Right now, the only practical 'body and soul' type help the people of Utica are receiving is coming from the Red Cross, and the Red Cross needs your donations badly.

Please help. The people of Utica thank you.

:hi:

1. Will contact Red Cross this AM
Thanks for the "heads up" Padrig. I had not heard about the tornado yet.

(p.s.: I was President of our local Red Cross Chapter for two years. God knows they need financial help in these days..)

2. Aye, and almost every National Guard unit in the state is in Iraq.
Edited on Wed Apr-21-04 09:07 AM by Padraig18
There is very little help available from places it's usually available--- like the National Guard--- so counties and municipalities across central and northern IL are sending their emergency-response and disaster teams. Tony is there with our county's disaster-response team, and he says the scene is grim.

You can 'earmark' it "Utica, IL tornado", if you wish., although they need unrestricted gifts more.

Thank you! :)

19. Statement from the Mayor of Utica, 4;30 p.m. CDT, 4/21/04:
Mayor Fred Esmond of, Utica, IL released the following statement late this afternoon:

"Late last night the town of Utica was hit by a large and powerful tornado. The tornado struck suddenly, and we were given only minutes to seek shelter and prepare ourselves for its arrival. At least 5 of our citizens are dead, and a score more were taken to area hospitals, some of them in critical condition; several remain hospitalized. I would ask you all to pray for their speedy recovery.

Over 200 homes are so badly damaged that they will not be able to be repaired, and almost 200 more are currently uninhabitable due to damage from the storm. Our downtown is largely destroyed. We remain without power and phone service throughout most of the town, although emergency telephone service has been restored to city hall, the water and sewage-treatment plant, the fire and police departments. Structural damage to the school is being evaluated.

Still, we in Utica are blessed. Almost as soon as word went out that Utica had been hit, help began arriving not only from our neighboring towns, but from villages, towns, cities and counties all over central and northern Illinois. These volunteers came from police, fire and sheriff's departments from as far away as Effingham and Galesburg, Danville and Springfield. People lived last night who might otherwise have died, had these brave men and women not come to our aid, and I do not have the words to adequately thank them for all they did last night and continue to do for us today. May God bless each and every one of you.

The Red Cross was here almost before the wind stopped blowing, giving out not only food and hot coffee, but vouchers so that those made homeless by the storm could stay in a motel, and warm blankets for those who chose to remain in their unheated homes on a damp and chilly night. Many here would have gone hungry last night and again today, were it not for them. As bad as last night was and today has been, it would have been much worse without the Red Cross. They have assured me that they will remain here for as long as they are needed and can help us, and that is a blessing, as well. Thank you all.

Finally, I want to thank the people of Utica themselves. I commend you all on your calm, and upon the countless examples I have witnessed of neighbor helping neighbor. The town of Utica was wounded last night, but it did not die. We will rebuild, and once again become the vital community we all love and treasure. The next few days will be difficult as we bury our dead and mourn their loss, but we will get through it, because we are tough. Utica will come back, that I promise you.

Thank you."

Thanks for your donations, all! :hi:

22. amen
Paddy, how far are you and Tony from Utica?

Mrs. V. and I sat out an F-5 in our basement two years ago -- we were about four crow-fly miles from the swath the La Plata tornado cut on 4/28/02. :scared: Give me an earthquake any day.

25. We're about 80 miles away, BUT...
We had our own tornado to deal with, too. Fortunately, the one that hit the edge of our town a glancing blow was pretty weak; the damage here was confined to downed trees, missing shingle and some barns destroyed. Still, it was scary enough that the puppy peed on me in the storm cellar, as I held him.

23. I feel terrible :-(
Just last night, I was complaining about the emergency alert system going off during the Cubs game over and over... I had no idea that there were any fatalaties. Thank God the tornado did not come northward, where there is a much higher population density and surely the tragedy would have been much worse.

My heart goes out to everyone in Utica who has suffered a loss, especially those who have lost a friend or family member.
