"We're also communicating this information in advance to the athletes, so that they know where the portable toilets are, and that we don't condone those acts (of going to the bathroom in public)."
Despite the use of 460 portable toilets last year,
residents complained that runners urinated, defecated, changed tampons and rubbed their private parts with Vaseline in public.
Note, Matcom lives only 5 minutes away, and didn't return repeated phoned messages on the matter. While hundreds of toilets were located at the Athletes Village and downtown at the Town Common, only 20 were placed near Grove Street, where the runners lined up in their corrals while they waited for the race to begin. As a result, many who felt the urge - from drinking fluids or from nerves -- had literally no place to go.
Last year, at Irene Timlege's Grove Street home, runners camped out on the back step and took turns relieving themselves in a shared bucket. Pleasant Street resident Deborah Finney was so appalled at the runners' conduct in her yard that she called police. The BAA sent a letter of apology to Hopkinton residents who were offended.
